The Vivo Nex is a unique smartphone with a bezel-less display without a notch in the sea of smartphones with a notch. Vivo is using a very clever tech in order to get rid of the notch on the Nex. The tech simply hides the front-facing camera inside the smartphone’s body and pushes it out using a motorized mechanism when the user wants to use the front camera.
But this isn’t the only good thing about Vivo Nex. Here are a bunch of features that make Vivo Nex an amazing smartphone to have. But before we start, let us take a look at what kind of specifications Vivo Nex has to offer.

Elevating Front Camera
I already mentioned the hidden front camera in the intro and to expand on that, to get rid of the notch, Vivo went ahead and created a really intelligent way to hide the phone’s front camera inside the phone’s body. The front camera slides in and out of the phone’s body behind the screen when the user wishes to take a selfie or use it for other purposes like video calling.
Vivo calls this feature the Elevating Front Camera and it is quite interesting how it works. It is an industry first design just like the in-screen fingerprint sensor that Vivo has on the Nex (more on that later).
The front-facing camera unit is quite solid and durable. It slides out using the motor that is inside the phone and the motor is heavy duty and can hold its own. The camera unit does not get stuck even if you are holding it with force and the motors are pretty powerful. Pushing the camera unit in with force doesn’t damage it at all, the motor will resist the push up to a level and when the force reaches a particular level, the camera retracts inside on its own.
In-Display Fingerprint & Other Hidden Sensors
This is the next big thing about the Vivo Nex. The phone has an in-display fingerprint sensor which was first seen on Vivo X21. The Vivo X21 had a fingerprint scanner that was very new for what it was and it was definitely visible when looked closely under the display. Not on the Vivo Nex.
The fingerprint scanner on the Vivo Nex is still under the display but it is much fast and also not visible which doesn’t make the phone stand out with a weird chip under the display. The fingerprint sensor is fast and functions very well and it is definitely an improvement over what the X21 had to offer.
The Vivo Nex also does other clever things like hiding the proximity & light ambient sensor under the display. You will also notice that there is no earpiece on the phone and Vivo Nex uses vibrations to create sounds so that you can hear the other side while you’re on a call. This is definitely unique and takes some time getting used to, but apart from that it functions quite normally and does the job well.
Amazing AI Based Features
The Vivo Nex takes advantage of AI, thanks to the Snapdragon 845 and its dedicated AI module to improve the user experience on the phone. The phone’s AI will automatically observe the user’s usage pattern and set the phone in such a way that it is personalized to the user. You will be able to see that the AI does a lot of things including setting up preferences that you like, assigning system resources to apps that you use the most and more things like giving you a better battery backup. Your phone’s RAM will be assigned in an intelligent way to the apps that you use the most.
The AI features aren’t just limited to these things, there is also an AI game mode that will automatically boost the Vivo Nex’s processor’s performance to give you the best possible gaming experience. You will also notice that the AI pretty much gets rid of accidental touches while you’re gaming.
The phone’s AI also enhances the camera experience so you have features like AI scene recognition which takes advantage of a large database of scenarios and photos to provide you with the best possible photo settings. The phone can easily identify a lot of things like plants, food, portraits and more in order to give you the best photography settings.
Vivo also focuses a lot on their front cameras and they have provided another AI based feature called the AI Face Beauty which will be able to identify your skin tone, gender, lighting conditions and give you the best settings automatically for that perfect selfie that you want to post.
The combination of AI and the dual camera setup also means that you have an AI-enhanced HDR mode. The HDR mode captures a bunch of photos with different and wider dynamic range and stitches the photos together to give you an amazing HDR shot.
The phone’s AI also has a personality and it is called Jovi. Jovi is an assistant that lets you access the phone’s AI suite and you can do a lot of things with Jovi. It has features like navigation, image recognition and the best of all, it helps you while you’re on an online shopping spree.
All these AI based features are possible due to the deep learning algorithms that are integrated with the firmware of the phone and they make up for a good package for sure.
Amazing Super AMOLED Ultra FullView Display
The Vivo Nex has a beautiful 6.59-inch Ultra FullView Display with an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. This is a Super AMOLED display that looks absolutely gorgeous and covers 91.24% of the front of the phone. The bezels are extremely thin with 2.16mm on the top, 5.08mm on the bottom and 1.71mm on both sides of the phone.
Since the display has a Super AMOLED panel, the colors look really good and they have deep blacks as well. With such thin bezels, you might think that the phone will generate a lot of accidental touches on the side, but the phone does a brilliant job of ignoring these touches and works really well.
Camera Experience on Vivo Nex
We already talked about the front facing camera but what about the quality and the rear camera setup? Just like any other flagship phone out there the phone comes with a dual rear camera setup on the back. The phone has a new generation Sony IMX363 lens with a Sapphire crystal surface that protects it from scratches and other forms of damage.
It has 12MP dual pixel focusing with 1.4μm pixel sensors. The aperture is f/1.8 and the camera also has 4-axis OIS for stable shots. It also uses EIS to electronically stabilize the photos and videos. The focusing on this phone is super fast and quick so you can just take it out and click photos quickly.
The front camera, on the other hand, has an 8MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture. The photos taken from these cameras look great and they also have a great level of detail. The phone also uses AI to make the photos look better and making the whole camera experience on the phone great.
The Vivo Nex is a great smartphone and a gateway for us to get the perfect notch-less phone with a huge screen. It does so many things right and solves these problems in a scientifically clever way. The use of a retractable front camera, using vibrations instead of a proper earpiece, giving the users a ton of features with the help of AI, they are all really great things about the phone. The phone is beautifully designed hence a beauty and with Snapdragon 845 and 8GB RAM, it is a beast in performance. Vivo Nex is truly both a beauty and the beast.
