Over the years, Smartphones have constantly increased in size. Today, phones with 5.5-inch to 5.7-inch are fairly standard, and that’s where manufacturers have been focusing all their energy for a while now. This results in neglect of consumers who prefer something more compact, and that’s precisely where the Coolpad Note 5 Lite comes in. Known for catering to wide strata of budget conscious buyers, Coolpad packed all its hardware expertise in this compact phone that delivers. Let’s take a closer look at what the new Cooolpad Note 5 Lite is all about.

Design and Build

The phone flaunts an attractive metal unibody design and has an aesthetically appealing 2.5D Glass on the front – both of which are quite rare in this budget.  Apart from the choice of display size, narrow bezels around the screen (70.6 percent screen-to-body ratio) also help reduce the overall footprint. Being compact, the phone is very easy to handle and to maneuver with one hand. It’s small but not fragile. There are no flexes and creaks in the body, and the 2500mAh battery adds a decent heft to it which makes it feel substantial.

The power button is easily accessible on the right edge and so is the volume rocker on the left. The phone. The audio jack is placed on top and the microUSB port with OTG support is present at the bottom. Right above the display, you will find the regular earpiece flanked by an 8MP front camera and LED flash. On the rear, there are symmetrically designed camera module and fingerprint sensor further adding to the looks of the Note 5 Lite.

The Note 5 Lite comes with a 5-inch display with 720p HD resolution amounting to a densely packed 294 PPI. The display feels perfectly crisp and sharp. Colors are quite vibrant and well balanced. The display gets bright enough for comfortable viewing outdoors. The auto brightness control is also present and works efficiently. The display is also protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and its rounded corners (2.5D glass) make it feel more premium that what you will usually find in this budget.

Camera and Imaging

In spite of this being a ‘Lite’ phone, Coolpad hasn’t compromised on the imaging hardware. The 13MP rear camera on the Coolpad Note 5 Lite punches above its weight. You get excellent shots in good outdoor lighting. The performance understandably falters indoors in low lighting as is the case with all budget snappers. The rear camera performance ranks high when compared to the best available options under 10,000 INR.

The 8MP selfie camera ensures crisp selfies and groupfies. Moreover, the front LED flash will help salvage shots taken in inadequate lighting.

Hardware, software, and performance

Coolpad employs a rather modest 1.0GHz MT6737CP otca-core chipset in the Note 5 Lite in this handset, but as their previous offerings with similar chipset demonstrate, this doesn’t necessarily mean compromise with performance, especially for basic and moderate users who constitute the majority.

In our initial testing, we didn’t encounter any lag or stuttering on the handset while using it for normal apps. The device is not meant for gaming or heavy apps consumption but it can handle normal apps like WhatsApp, Facebook etc without any issues.

Besides, the ample 3GB RAM onboard shall ensure that the performance remains intact in the long run. Internal storage is 16GB, and you can further add up to 64GB of secondary microSD storage.

On the software front, the handset is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow based Cool UI 8.0. The software is rich in features and is quite capable of catering to all your individual personalization needs. The quick setting panel pops up from the bottom and that helps with one-handed usage. Other contemporary features like gesture support, super screenshots, and a number of fingerprint scanner triggers are all present.

Battery life, Price, and Verdict

The 2500mAh battery on the Coolpad Note 5 Lite easily lasts for a day of moderate to heavy usage. The call quality and signal reception was also excellent in our area. The phone also supports Reliance Jio 4G VoLTE networks.

In India, the Coolpad Note 5 Lite will retail for 8,199 INR on, and based on our experience with the device so far, that looks like a very reasonable price for the value you are getting, especially if you are looking for an easily manageable, compact smartphone.
