Asus Zenfone 3S Max Review – Best Big Battery Smartphone?

The Zenfone Max series from Asus is known for the great battery life that they provide. These phones aren’t the best-specced phones out there but they do what they claim the best. Asus has today launched the Asus Zenfone 3S Max in India for Rs. 14,999 and it brings some great stuff like an octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and a big 5,000 mAh battery. Let’s check how this phone fairs out in this review of the Asus Zenfone 3S Max.

Key Specifications

  • 1.5Ghz MediaTek MT6750 octa-core processor
  • 5.2-inch 720p HD display with 2.5D glass
  • 3GB RAM; 32GB internal storage – expandable up to 2TB with microSD
  • 13MP rear camera with 5P Largen Lens; 8MP front selfie camera
  • 5000mAh battery – supports reverse charging
  • Android 7.0 Nougat with ZenUI 3.0

Design & Build Quality

Asus has used aluminum to build the Zenfone 3S Max and the device feels quite sturdy in hand and it does not feel heavy even though it comes with a big battery and metal construction. The design is also a bit different. The front sports a 5.2-inch display and below the display, there’s a fingerprint sensor.

Above the display, you’ll find the speaker mesh and the front facing camera. There’s also some space for stuff like proximity sensor and that’s it. The front is quite clean.

The back is quite different from what we have seen in recent Zenfone devices and there’s a 13MP rear camera with Asus’s real-tone LED flash. There’s also an Asus branding and the lower side has a small plastic strip for better signal reception.

The right edge of the phone houses the power/lock button and the volume buttons. The SIM tray is on the left edge of the phone. Overall the phone is quite sturdy and looks good in terms of design.

The phone has a 5.2-inch HD 720p display but there’s a reason for having 720p here. The main aim of the phone is to provide an exceptional battery life. One of the most battery consuming part of the smartphone is the screen.

The display here is 720p which means it has few numbers of pixels to light up in the 5.2-inch display which ultimately means the battery consumption will be lesser than that of a 1080p display. The display itself is decent looking and crisp and can produce some really good looking colors.

Camera & Imaging

Asus is also focusing on the camera this time and you’ll get a primary camera of 13MP on the back. The rear camera features a 5P Largen lens which claims to have a great clarity and better optical properties. Asus has also provided great camera features like night mode, ability to take super-resolution photos and more into its camera app on the phone.

The front-facing camera is an 8MP shooter which can take some good and clear selfies. It’s supported by camera features like beauty mode etc. which compliments the camera well. dual camera setup on the back.

The camera works well but it is not the best camera in this price segment. There are devices which offer a better camera performance like Redmi note 4 or devices like Honor 6X which offer a dual camera setup on the back.

Software, Hardware & Performance

The phone runs on Android 7 Nougat which is currently the latest version of Android available. Asus has skinned the software with their own Asus ZenUI 3.0 which brings some great features like ZenMotion touch gestures and more to the device. The software is smooth and it has extra stuff like the Mobile Manager which will help you set auto start and other options for apps so they don’t consume much battery.

The phone is very well balanced on the hardware part as well. It comes with a MediaTek MT6750 1.5Ghz octa-core processor which is a good processor for this phone. You also get 3GB RAM which can handle apps very well. These set of specifications aren’t really overkill and they do the job just fine. This device is not meant for heavy gaming.

Battery Life & Verdict

With a 5000 mAh battery, the phone is expected to have a great battery life and it quite frankly does. The fact that Asus has also enabled the phone to be used as a power bank for reverse charging clearly shows the fact that this phone is indeed a champion in the battery department. The phone easily lasts for 2 days even with heavy usage.

This phone is a great buy if you want to buy a smartphone that provides great battery life. It is priced at Rs. 14,999 and supports VoLTE which is another plus point. Go for it if you’re looking for a phone that doesn’t die because of low battery at the end of the day.
