Asus ROG STRIX G G531 – First Look

The ROG or Republic of Gamers line-up of products from Asus are focused on one niche and one niche only – Gaming. You will find all kinds of products in the line-up including motherboards, coolers, and even laptops. The Asus ROG Strix G G531 is a gaming laptop that comes just under 2.5KGs and yet carries an amazing set of specifications.

The laptop has a bunch of variants with different processors with options from the Intel Core i7-9750H and the Intel Core i5-9300H.  In India, the laptop will be launched along with an Intel Core i7-9750H and a GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB VRAM. You can also have a mechanical hard drive or choose to go for a complete SSD based system as per your choice.

Display & Build

The laptop will be launched in India with a 15.6-inch IPS display which has a refresh rate of 120Hz and a response time of less than 3ms. Coupled with the GTX 1650, the display will be able to take full advantage of the card and you will be able to run games at high refresh rate as well.

As mentioned, the refresh rate is a huge deal for the laptop since 120Hz is a number that’s found in desktop grade gaming monitors. 120Hz means your laptop’s display panel will be able to show 120 frames in a second on the display. Apart from this, this is an IPS display so you can expect the color to be accurate and Asus themselves claim that both of these displays cover 100% of the sRGB color gamut.

The build of the laptop is definitely solid and it comes with a ten key-less keyboard along with Asus’s own Smart Gesture trackpad. You will find that the keys on the keyboard are RGB backlit and there are also a bunch of macro keys on top of the keyboard which you can customize as per your choice.

One of the highlights of the laptop is the new wraparound RGB light bar which illuminates the outer edge of the chassis. You can customize the light bar or strip using the pre-installed software.

Performance & Processing

Since this is a gaming laptop, you can expect it to give you a really great gaming performance. The 4GB NVIDIA GTX 1650 is the new budget gaming GPU which is quite different from the older GTX 1050. The GTX 1650 has 1024 CUDA cores while the older GTX 1050 only had 640. This results in a great improvement in gaming performance.

The laptop performs exceptionally well when it comes to handling games. While the GTX 1650 performs really well in games such as Fortnite and it can easily shell out 70-80fps while in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, the game was easily able to give more than 90fps at 1080p Very High settings.

Coming to the processor, you get an Intel Core i7-9750H which is a great laptop class processor. If you want a laptop that you need for gaming and some professional work, then the i7-9750H is a good option with its 6-cores and 12 threads.

IO & Expansion

One of the major FEATURES in today’s laptop is upgradability. The laptop allows you to replace the RAM along with the PCIe m.2 SSD and also has a 2.5-inch slot which can either allow a mechanical hard drive, but also a 2.5-inch SATA SSD if you want to do it in the future. This allows the laptop to have an extended life since the addition of these components directly improves the performance of the laptop.

Coming to the IO, you have the following options:

  • 3x USB 3.1 Type-A ports
  • 1x HDMI 2.0 port for external display
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

As you can see, there is no USB Type-C port let alone a Thunderbolt 3 port. This is one of the downsides of the laptop but you do have that option in the ROG Strix III launching on 9 July in India.

First impressions

The Asus ROG Strix G G531 comes in different variants but overall the laptop can be a great choice for anyone who wants to game and work on the go. You can choose from the two different processors along with multiple storage options.  Apart from that, you have a high refresh rate screen option also available on the laptop.

This laptop seems like a winner for sure and with the light weight of just 2.4KGs, it can still house all these powerful components in the laptop form factor which definitely looks good. Additionally, we really like the new wraparound RGB light bar.
