Ultrafone 701 HD is the flagship Android smartphone from Zen Mobiles. It is one of the few quad core Android smartphone available in the market which does not create a hole in your pockets. The device costs less than Rs 12,000 but at the same time offers features that we have seen only in the mid range or the high end smartphones.
Ultrafone 701 HD is one of those few mobiles which come with so many additional accessories. The device comes with a screen protector, additional back panel and a flip cover. If you want to know about the retail box contents of the Ultrafone 701 HD, checkout our unboxing post. The device provides features of a high end smartphone at a much lower price, so does this mean it is the best mobile in its segment? Would the device be able to stand against the existing smartphones in the market? Read on to find out.
Display & Design
The first thing which we noticed about the device was its weight. The device weighs around 165 grams and therefore feels bit heavy in hands. Talking about the build quality, the device feels quite solid. It comes with a 5 inch HD IPS LCD display which has a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. The display is good enough to enjoy HD videos and movies on the device. While using the touchscreen we didn’t face any problems and it works smoothly.
Above the display you have the ambient light sensor, an earpiece and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The front camera can only be used for video calling and you cannot access the front camera via the default camera app present on the device.
Below the display you have three touch buttons for menu, home and back.
On the right side of the device you have the power/lock key. Just like most of the other smartphones these days, Ultrafone 701 HD also does not have any dedicated camera key.
You just have a lone volume rocker on the left side of the phone.
On the top of the phone you have a 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB port. The device does not support USB on the go (OTG).
At the bottom of the device you do not have ports. You just have a beautifully hidden small notch to open the back panel on the lower left edge of the device.
Ultrafone 701 HD comes with a rubberized back panel. The device is available in two colors white and black. But the good thing is if you opt for either of the colors you get the other color back cover free with the device. At the back you would find a 8 megapixel camera along with LED flash and Zen branding in the center. You also have a speaker slit at the back.
Ultrafone 701 HD is a dual SIM Android smartphone and underneath the back panel you have the 2 Slots for the SIM card. You can use 3G only from the SIM 1.
Hardware & Performance
The phone is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor along with 1GB RAM. It comes with 4GB internal storage which can be expanded by using a microSD card of upto 32GB storage. The device has powerful specs and we did not face any lag while using the phone. But is it powerful enough to run all the latest games and apps available on the Google PlayStore? There is only one way to find out, Gaming Test. We did a small gaming test on the device to see the performance of the device.
From the above video it is clear that the phone can handle nearly all the games available on the Google PlayStore with ease. If you are still not satisfied and doubt the performance of the device, you can check out the Benchmark tests we performed on the device. We performed two of the most famous benchmark tests Quadrant and Antutu on the Ultrafone 701 HD.
The device scored pretty well in these tests and considering it to be an entry level Android Smartphone based on its price the device exceeds our expectations in terms of performance. So Ultrafone 701 HD is a powerful device which can handle most of your daily tasks, apps and games with ease. Talking about the connectivity features of the device, it supports WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth and GPS.
Zen Ultrafone 701 HD runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS. The first thing which any user would see in the smartphone is the lock screen. Company has modified the lock screen and now you can have multiple screens in the lock screen itself. You can add various widgets on the lock screen and users can also launch the camera app directly from the lock screen. We also liked the power scheduling feature provided in the phone.
You would also find few apps pre-installed in the phone such as Google chrome, MX Player, Saavn, Skype, Twitter and Facebook. The mobile also has a special app store called as the Zen store where the company features some of the famous apps of the Google PlayStore. The Store just links the apps from Google PlayStore and does not host any of the apps on its servers. Ultrafone 701 HD comes with an app called as the Zen Update center which provides over the air updates to the users.
The phone comes with a 8 megapixel back camera along with LED flash and a 3.2 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. The camera offers variety of modes including HDR. One of the interesting modes available in the camera is the multi-angle view mode where the camera allows the user to capture a wide view of an object.
The camera also has a continuous shot which allows the user to capture upto 99 images continuously. Besides these, camera also supports zero shutter delay, face detection, panorama, smile shot, best shot and EV bracket shot mode. Here are few sample images taken from the 8 MP present on Ultrafone 701 HD:
The quality of captured images is average. You would be able to capture some decent images in good light conditions but in case of low light conditions the camera simply gave up. We faced a hard time in clicking images in low light condition even with the flash on. There was a problem with the flash synchronization, at times the image was completely dark even when the flash was on. here is a quick video overview of the camera interface and settings of the Ultrafone 701 HD:
Ultrafone 701 HD comes with a 2000mAh battery. The battery can easily last for a day with moderate usage.
We are able to use the device for an entire day and there was still some charge left in the battery. During the day we made few calls, played HD videos, browsed internet and our 3G connection was on for the entire day.
