Yu Yutopia Review – Better Than Flagship smartphones?

Yu Televentures is a subsidiary of Micromax, which is known to sell phones that are directed towards the youth of India and hence the name Yu. Yu has released some phones that took the Indian smartphone market by storm and since the last few months, Yu was constantly teasing the Yu Yutopia, which was supposed to be one of the best phones Yu or any other company released in India for that matter. Now that the phone is released, is the phone really living up to all the hype? Let’s find out in this review of the Yu Yutopia smartphone!

Design & Build

The design of phone reminds greatly of the Yu Yuphoria, which introduced the design and form factor that Yu has been following since Yuphoria. The phone is a really sleek design with a thickness of just 7.2mm. The phone’s build quality is quite solid and has enough metal on it to make it feel premium.

The front of the device has a 5.2-inch screen that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and this screen has a QHD (1440×2560) resolution, and the pixel density is 565ppi. The screen is really good to look at – more on it later. The back of the device has a camera with a dual tone LED flash that is housed inside a “Saturn Ring”. Below the camera, you will find a fingerprint scanner that is quite responsive and can be used to click selfies as well. The speakers are at the bottom of the device.

The right side of the device has the three button set with the volume rockers and the power lock and unlock button in the middle. The top of the device has a 3.5mm audio jack and the microUSB port can be found on the bottom of the device.

The phone is quite aptly sized and many people who don’t like the larger phones are going to like the form factor for sure!

The screen looks actually good. The display is a 5.2-inch 2K – 2560x1440p resolution touch panel and it is totally PureBlack which makes the blacks on the display look darker. The display has a pixel density of 565ppi which is better than many displays on devices out there. The display has a color tone that is a bit on a cooler side, but that is not visible normally.

The colors on the display are beautiful and they pop out and hence all the details are displayed in a good manner. It is surely one of the best display you can get in the market.

The camera of on the Yu Yutopia is surprisingly really good! The phone comes with a 21 MP primary camera that has a Sony IMX230 Sensor and the camera features all the latest technologies like PDAF, OIS, HDR, etc. The autofocus can focus on a subject in just 0.2second. The camera also comes with a Blue Glass filter that make the pictures more good looking. The front facing camera is also good and it is an 8MP shooter that is good for taking selfies.

The camera also comes with a Blue Glass filter that make the pictures more good looking. The front facing camera is also good and it is an 8MP shooter that is good for taking selfies. However, there are few UI issues with the camera and we faced minor lag while taking photos.

The phone comes with a 3000 mAh battery and the Quick Charge 2.0 technology that can charge the device pretty fast. The device performs decent with most of the battery being used by the 2K screen but with the quick charge feature you can charge the battery pretty quickly. The battery is decent but not the best we have seen.

Hardware & Performance

The phone is powered by a 2.0 Ghz Snapdragon 810 processor that is backed by 4GB RAM. The graphics and gaming are powered by the Adreno 430 GPU that is great. The processor is one of the top tier chips available in the market and hence the performance is actually top notch. You get 32 GB storage by default on the device that can be expanded up to 128GB.

The device can handle heavy multi-tasking or gaming with ease. We tried playing high-end games like Asphalt 8, Nova 3, GTA San Andreas on the smartphone and it was able to handle all the games without any trouble. We didn’t face any heating issues with the smartphone that is an added advantage.

Fingerprint scanner

The fingerprint sensor/scanner is quickly becoming a native feature in smartphones nowadays. The Yu Yutopia has a fingerprint sensor at the back of the device but to be honest, this is not the best sensor they could have added on the device. You will notice that the finger print sensor will work for like 3 out of 5 times. Maybe this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Although, if you keep your finger on the sensor for a second or two it works most of the time.

Yu has once again partnered by Cyanogen for Yutopia and hence the phone runs on Cyanogen 12.1 OS which is based on Android 5.1. The Cyanogen 12.1 OS brings features like themes, security features etc. The Android 6.0 update will be made available for Yu Yutopia but no date has been disclosed yet. It is one of the most enhanced OS you can find in the market with a number of added features and customization options.

Around YU

With Yutopia, Yu has taken a leap of faith in a service that aggregates several different services like checking railway tickets, booking a cab, flights or ordering food etc. This is done in partnership with Ixigo and the feature is integrated right into the launcher and you can access it by swiping right on the home screen. This is a good feature and you won’t find it on any other smartphone.

The phone is no doubt a great piece of technology ever manufactured by an Indian company. The phone touches all the right sections and can be a great choice for the users looking for a flagship device at an affordable price. Another good thing about the device is that it will be available without any invite system. Since it comes with a 2K display it is a perfect device for multimedia consumption.

Qualities like good build quality, fast charging, powerful processor, 4GB RAM and Cyanogen OS makes it a great smartphone. However, the company needs to work on the fingerprint sensor and camera issues. Overall, if you are looking for the best smartphone in 30K INR price than you can definitely keep Yutopia at the top of your list.
