Design & Build Quality

YU Yureka is not a very slim or light weight device but it has a better build quality than most of the other smartphones in this price segment. The entire device does not contain any Micromax branding which clearly indicated that YU does not wants to be associated with the parent company.

The device measures 155 x 78 x 8.8 mm and weighs around 160 grams. The front of the phone is quite similar to any other affordable phablet. It has a 5.5 inch HD display which has a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The display is bright, has good viewing angles and offer decent sunlight/outdoor readability.

Above the display you have a  megapixel front facing camera, an earpiece, hidden proximity & ambient light sensors and a notification LED. The notification LED is bit small and hardly visible when it is not blinking or turned on.

Below the display you have three usual capacitive touch buttons – menu, home and back. The buttons has a good haptic feedback and they have back light so that users can find the buttons easily even in low light conditions.

You will find a power/lock key on the right side of the device and a volume rocker on the left. Both the keys have metallic finish which gives them a premium look and feel.

At the top of the device you have a 3.5 mm audio jack. Micro USB port and primary mic for voice calling is present at the bottom.

Moving to the back, it comes with a removable back panel which has a matte finish. Company calls it as Moon stone grey and it feels good in hand. It looks like Oneplus One Sandstone back in color but the texture is totally different. You have a 13 megapixel camera along with LED flash, a secondary mic and loudspeaker at the back.

Underneath the back panel you will find a 2500 mAh battery, microSD slot and two micro SIM card slots.

Though it is a 5.5 inch phablet but you will find it easy to hold and use. Overall the build quality of YU Yureka is pretty good for the price.

Hardware & Performance

The phone is powered by a 1.5 Ghz octa core Snapdragon 615 processor along with Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB RAM. The performance is pretty good and we didn’t face any kind of lag or slowness while using the device. It has smooth interface and you won’t face any kind of lag even while doing multitasking.

To measure the performance of the device we ran few benchmark apps on the device – Antutu, Quadrant standard, GeekBench 3 and Nenamark2. The device achieved good scores in all the tests and you can watch the video below to see the scores:

According to benchmark scores Yureka is a powerful device in terms of performance. But what about real world apps? Can it run high end games? Do find the answer we played Asphalt 8, Nova 3 and Temple run 2 on the device:

The device was able to handle both the high end games with ease. During our 20 mins of gaming there was no lag or heating issues with the device. The phone comes with 16 GB of internal sorage which can be expanded by using a micro SD card.

Talking about other connectivity it supports 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and USB OTG. At this price point it is a very powerful device and you won’t face any kind of performance related issues.

Yureka runs on Cyanogen OS 11 based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS. The interface is similar to stock Android but offers a lot more features and customization. Company has promised to provide regular software updates to the user and they will soon release the Cyanogen 12 based on Android Lollipop.

You can easily customize the entire interface using themes. You can modify lock screen, notification panel and status bar. Users can also enable the on screen buttons and program the physical touch buttons to perform different actions.

The phone comes Baton app pre-installed on the device which lets you sync you games and apps across multiple devices and cloud. Other interesting apps preloaded on the device are AudioFX which lets you customize the audio output and Screencast which records your device screen. Users can even root their device without voiding their warranty.

Yu Yureka comes with a 13 megapixel back camera with LED flash and a 5 megapixel front facing camera. The phone comes with Cyanogen camera app which offers lot of features and settings. You can easily adjust the settings like ISO, focus mode, shutter speed etc and change the modes by simple vertical swipes. To know more about the camera interface, settings and sample images watch the video below:

The front camera can capture decent quality selfies and can be used for video calls.

Battery Life

Yureka comes with a 2500 mAh removable battery which can last for an entire day with moderate usage. The device takes around 2.5-3 hours to charge completely using the charger provided in the box. With heavy usage i.e playing lot of games, 3G browsing and calling the phone will last for less than a day. Overall it has an average battery life.

YU Yureka is available in India for Rs 8,999 which makes it a value for money device. It is currently the best affordable 4G smartphone available in India. After comparing it with the Redmi note 4G we found Yureka to be a better device. The only problem with the device is its limited availability.
