Xiaomi generally plays it safe in the budget price range but quite recently launched its bezel-less flagship, the Mi Mix 2, priced at 35,999 INR. So, naturally, a comparison with one of the best mid-range phone we saw this year, the Honor 8 Pro is in order. The Honor 8 Pro that launched a few months back still remains one of the most competitive mid-rangers around, but how well does it stack against the Xiaomi’s new, slick and bezel-less flagship? Let’s sort that with a detailed comparison between the two.

Design and Build
The design is the primary highlight of the Mi Mix 2. It has a 5.99-inch 18:9 full view display with extremely narrow bezels on all sides. There is no bezel on top and a narrow strip runs through the bottom. On the rear, the phone flaunts a ceramic back panel that’s also a fingerprint magnet.
The Honor 8 Pro, on the other hand, houses a 16:9 5.7-inch display in a reasonably compact body. It has metal on the rear that feels more durable and 2.5D glass on the front.
Both phones feel extremely premium, but yes the Mi Mix 2 will surely turn more heads. However, it must be noted that the bezel-less form factor of the Mi Mix 2 comes at a price. To start with the phone is more susceptible to damage should you drop it.
Mi Mix 2 surely looks like a phone from the future but Honor 8 Pro is not bad either. It is slim, easy to hold and feels sturdy in hand. Overall, Mi Mix 2 does look better but when it comes to build quality, both the smartphones are equally good.
The Mi Mix 2 uses a 5.99-inch panel with Full HD+ resolution and in comparison, the Honor 8 Pro has a sharper 2K IPS LCD display. The Honor 8 Pro has one of the best IPS LCD displays that we have seen this year, and it certainly outdoes the Mi Mix 2.
The Mi Mix 2, on the other hand, offers a full view display which feels great while browsing or accessing applications. It is hard to pick one of the devices just based on display but since Honor 8 Pro is offering you a higher resolution you should consider it as an added advantage. But at the same time Mix 2 will offer you a more immersive viewing experience.
This is another area where Honor 8 Pro emerges as a winner. The single rear camera on Mi Mix 2 can shoot bright and vibrant images in good lighting but the camera performance falters indoors and in artificial lighting.
The Honor 8 Pro, on the other hand, benefits from an extra shooter on the rear (dual 12mp). The two shooters can together gather more light and thus deliver better low light performance. The shots look stunning both indoors and outdoors.
As for selfie camera, the 5MP shooter on the Mi Mix 2 is oddly placed and one of its biggest drawback. It won’t work with third-party apps like Snapchat and Instagram, and even the default camera app asks you to turn the phone upside down when you shoot a selfie. Honor 8 Pro has no such inconvenience associated with it and comes with an 8 mp front camera.
Honor 8 Pro has one of the best dual camera setups we have seen this year. So, if the camera is your primary reason to buy a new smartphone, Honor 8 Pro should be your choice.
Performance and Software
Performance-wise, both phones are equally competent. The Mi Mix 2 is powered by 2.4GHz octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Honor 8 Pro is no slouch either. It’s powered by 2.4GHz octa-core Kirin 960 processor paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Both phones can handle whatever you throw at them with perfect ease. Both phones are running Android Nougat based software. Both the MIUI 8.5 on Mi Mix 2 and the EMUI 5.0 on Honor 8 Pro are rich in customization options and features.
Fingerprint sensors on both phones are fast and accurate. Call quality is also excellent on both phones. The audio output via speakers is a tad louder on the Honor 8 Pro.
Battery, Price, and Verdict
The Honor 8 Pro has a bigger 4000mAh battery compared to Mi Mix 2 (3400mAh) and in practical usage, it does manage to last a tad longer. Both phones support fast charging.
Comparing the two, the Mi Mix 2 has a trendy bezel-less display, but in substance, the Honor 8 Pro is a more pragmatic choice. It benefits from better camera performance, a sharper and more vibrant display, has a bigger battery and it is significantly cheaper. You can get it for Rs. 26,999 which is around 9,000 INR cheaper than the Mi Mix 2 (Rs. 35,999)
So, go with Honor 8 Pro if you want a better value for money proposition but you can also opt for Mi Mix 2 is you want to flaunt that bezel-less design.
