Tecno i7 Review – Decent Smartphone for Offline Buyers

Transsion holdings, which also brought its iTel brand to India last year, has now introduced a slew of Tecno branded smartphones for young consumers. It must be noted that Tecno is an offline only brand that will initially operate in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat.

The Tecno i7 is what leads the pack of new Transsion holding smartphones. It packs some very interesting hardware and a feature rich software based on the latest Android flavor, Android 7.0 Nougat. Let’s explore the phone further to estimate whether it can hold its ground amidst fierce competition from online and offline brands.

Design and Build

The Tecno i7 has a metal unibody design, that’s somewhat different from the metal unibody template that is conventional in this budget, even when it follows nearly the same recipe. Tecno’s biggest win is the fact that it has managed to keep the thickness (7.6mm) and weight (155 grams) in check, in spite of the phone housing a 4000mAh battery.

The phone looks quite elegant and ergonomic. The fingerprint sensor is present on the front, integrated with the home button and it’s also shielded with a sapphire glass. The front on the phone is also layered with 2.5D curved glass. Tecno also bundles a protective silicon back cover with the phone that has flaps over Audio Jack and Micro USB port to protect them from dirt and grime.

Tecno i7 includes a 5.5-inch full HD display that’s sharp and shows accurate colors. The white balance, however, feels a bit off but this can be rectified to an extent using the blue light filter.

The screen is very bright when set at maximum brightness and you won’t have any trouble operating the phone under direct sun. An outdoor mode is also present on the phone that can pump brightness to maximum for 15-minutes and then automatically turns it down.

Camera and Imaging hardware

For photography, the Tecno i7 includes a 16MP front camera with flash and a 13MP rear camera with quadruple LED flash. The front selfie camera can shoot decent and detailed selfies. For Low light conditions, the device uses screen flash & led flash at the same for better images.

The rear camera can capture a decent amount of details in good lighting. The image backdrop was often over or under exposed. The quad LED flash on the rear can help in clicking decent shots in pitch dark ambiance.

All said and done, the camera performance of both rear and front camera is decent but not the best performance we have seen at this price. The powerful quad LED present on the rear camera is something unique and does help in pitch dark ambiance both for videos and selfies.

Performance and Software

The Tecno i7 is powered by 1.5GHz octa-core MT6750T chipset paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The performance we are getting from the phone is smooth for normal users. We didn’t face any issue with our day to day usage but when we pushed the phone to its limits with high-end gaming we did notice lag and frame drops. Tecno i7 also includes all major sensors apart from the Magnetometer. Call quality was pretty good in our area.

The handset is running Hi OS based on Android  7.0 Nougat, and the software needs to be optimized. Initially, we faced a lot of bugs and issues with the software. The company did release an update which fixes most of the issues but still, the company needs to work more on software part.

The software also includes loads of animations and features like Split-screen modes, a few power saving modes, theme store and more. You can long press the icons to unfurl a list of options and can also avail a WhatsApp mode that restricts data to all apps running in the background except WhatsApp.

Battery, Price, and Verdict

The 4000mAh battery on the handset lasts really long. Even with two SIM cards plugged in and with moderate to heavy usage, we could easily make it through a day on single charge. You need not worry about the battery backup.

Priced at 14,990 INR, the Tecno i7 does is a bit more expensive compared to the online counterparts, but feels quite reasonable compared to other offline phones out there. Besides, Tecno is also offering 1-year screen replacement and 1 year buy back offer with every purchase. The Tecno i7 is not the best smartphone in the online or offline market, but it’s still a decent smartphone for offline buyers.
