Smartron Quick Review – Affordable Surface Alternative

With the flood gates of the Indian electronics market wide open, different companies are trying to dominate the market by launching all sorts of electronics. Most of these new products are being launched in the mobile devices category which is currently the hottest electronics category in India.

Many Indian companies are trying to snap their market share in this rush of brands and one of these brands is a company in which Sachin Tendulkar has invested. The name of the company is Smartron which plans to provide IoT or Internet of Things products in India. Their product line-up has started from the Smartron which is a 2-in-1 tablet. It is a Windows 10 tablet/laptop which is a product manufactured by keeping Microsoft Surface in mind. In this post we will take a look at all the aspects of the device and see how this device fairs.

Design, Looks & Build

When is comes to design, the Smartron reminds the users of Microsoft Surface – which is not a bad thing. The tablet has a sturdy build quality. As per Smartron, this tablet was made out of magnesium and aluminum which gives this tablet a weight. The back of the device has a kickstand which helps the tablet to be in a laptop like orientation when it is opened. Surprisingly, the kickstand is sturdy and can be used easily to make the laptop stay in different angles.

The device has a 12.2 inches display in the front along with the webcam, speakers and the back of the tablet has the kickstand along with the orange or gray colored back.

When it comes to ports, you get a microSD slot, two USB 3 ports, a Micro-HDMI port and a USB Type-C port on the left side of the tablet. The USB Type-C port can also double as the charger port, which is good. There is a single 3.5mm port for audio. You’ll also see power and volume buttons on the top, and there are contact points on the bottom of the tablet for the keyboard cover attachment.

Let us talk about the specifications of the Smartron in this section.

  • Intel Core M-5Y10C processor clocked up to 2GHz
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac
  • 5-megapixel rear-facing camera; 2-megapixel webcam
  • 12.2 inches Screen with resolution of 2560×1600 pixels
  • 16:10 aspect ratio
  • Expandable memory with microSD card up to 128GB
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 30-day free trial of Microsoft Office

Performance & Day-to-day usage stats

The Smartron does seem like a really decent 2-in-1 tablet/laptop and it is for the price. The keyboard cover is great and combined with the tablet, it works as a perfect companion for the tablet. Not only are the keys responsive, but they are also easy to get used to. The trackpad is also responsive but you shouldn’t expect much since the sensor quality isn’t that great to keep the aesthetics of the cover thin.

The tablet itself runs on Windows 10 Home 64-bit which uses the 4GB RAM quite well to provide you a stable working system. The touch screen is an added advantage and Windows 10 takes full advantage of the touch screen to provide you a good user interface when the tablet is being used without the keyboard.

Features like system going to sleep when the tablet is covered with the keyboard cover make the usability quite good and are a welcome feature.

Battery Life

The battery life on this device is decent and the device can provide you up to 4 hours of battery life under stress usage. But if you are a normal user who plans to use this device for mostly internet browsing and document editing, then you can expect a battery life of up to 8 hours which is great.

The Smartron is a one of its kind 2-in-1 Windows 10 tablet in India. It is better than other hybrid tablets in the market right now and if you want a Microsoft Surface like system at lower price, then this is the system you should go for.
