At first look you will find Samsung Galaxy S5 just like any other galaxy device available in the market. The device measures 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm and weighs around 145 grams. It is made of plastic with a dotted pattern at the back. One key feature of Galaxy S5 is that it is a waterproof smartphone. So now you can use your device in shower or rain without any worries. The front is dominated by a 5.2 inch full HD super AMOLED display which has a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels.

Below the display you will find a centrally located physical home button with multitasking and back touch button placed on either side. Here the company has made a slight modification as instead of a menu/properties key they have provided a multitasking key. If you still want to access the menu just long press the multitasking key to bring up the menu.

Samsung has also integrated a fingerprint scanner in S5 to provide users a faster and secure way of accessing their device. The scanner has been implemented in the home key itself and you can press the unlock button or home key and then swipe from up to down on the home key to unlock the device using fingerprint scanning.

Moving to the back of the device, Galaxy S5 comes with a removable back cover which has a dotted pattern. You will find a 16 megapixel camera along with LED flash & heart rate sensor, Samsung branding and a loud speaker at the back. The dotted pattern helps in improving the grip on the device and gives a premium feel to the device.

Overall, Galaxy S5 has a good design and build quality. Improvements like the water proof nature of the smartphone and dotted pattern at the back gives a premium feel to the device.

Display

Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 5.2 inch full HD display which is 0.1 inch bigger than the Galaxy S4 display. It is one of the best displays available in the market. The display is now brighter and has improved sunlight readability as compared to previous generation devices.

There is an extra sensitive mode for display which allows users to use gloves, pens or other similar objects to operate the touch screen. Company has also provided an auto adapt display in which the phone adjusts various display settings based on the application you are using.

Hardware & performance

Galaxy S5 comes with a Exynos Octa Core processor which makes it perform quite well in day to day tasks. It comes with 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and Adreno 330 GPU unit. We didn’t face any kind of lag or slowness even while playing high end games on the device. We performed few benchmark tests on the device and you can see the video below to find out the scores:

We even ran few high end games on the device to measure its gaming capabilities. The device was able to handle all the games with ease and we didn’t face any kind of graphic problems or lag in the games. Here is the gaming review video of Galaxy S5:

Talking about the hardware, company has also provided few special features in the device. It includes IR blaster, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor. All the three sensors work quite well. We were easily able to use the IR blaster to control various devices and fingerprint scanner to unlock our device quickly.

Software

Samsung Galaxy S5 runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat OS which is the latest Android version available in the market. Just like other Samsung devices company has added a layer of customized UI known as Touchwiz in the phone. The software is more or less like the previous galaxy devices.

The few noticeable changes are the updated S health app, finger print scanner settings & options, round and flat icons in settings panel and in the quick action bar in notification shade. Overall, we liked the software present on the Galaxy S5. Some users who want a stock Android experience might find it disappointing.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 16 megapixel back camera with LED flash. It has a 1/2.6” sensor, 1.12 ┬Ám pixel size and can record videos in 4k resolution. Galaxy S5 is capable of capturing amazing photos. The images which we took in good light had good amount of details and they are not pixelated at all. It comes with various modes like HDR, Simultaneous HD video and image recording, best shot, beauty shot, panorama, surround shot etc.

It is one fasted cameras available in the market in terms of focus speed. The phone cam focus on an object and take image in no time. It is undoubtedly one of the fastest auto focus I have seen on smartphones. The device can also take good quality images in low light conditions. Here are some sample images taken using the back camera of Galaxy S5:

Unfortunately the device does not have a dedicated camera key. The back camera can also record clear and sharp videos. It comes with various modes like slow motion, fast motion and smooth motion. The device also has a 2 megapixel front facing camera for video calling.

Battery Life

Galaxy S5 comes with a 2800 mAh battery which is bit bigger in terms of capacity as compare to S4 which had 2600 mAh battery. Once you full charge your device it can easily last for a day on heavy usage. In our test the battery lasted for around 22 hours in which we got around 4.5 hours of screen on time and 1 hour of calling.

Conclusion

Overall Samsung Galaxy S5 is a good flagship device. The phone is now available in India for Rs 39,000 you can definitely opt for this device if you are looking for a powerful device with amazing display, camera and some added features like waterproof, dustproof, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor.

Pros:

  • Powerful device
  • Sharp display
  • Decent build quality
  • Good Camera
  • Waterproof
  • Fingerprint scanner & Heart Rate Monitor
  • Battery Life

Cons:

  • No dedicated camera key

At this price point we find it to be better than most of the flagship devices available in the market. So if you have a max budget of 40,000 INR, do check out galaxy S5 as it won’t disappoint you.
