Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini was launched in India couple of months back. It is the miniature version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, one of the most popular Android smartphones available in the market. So is Galaxy S4 Mini worth Buying? Or you should just go with Galaxy S4? Read on to find out.
Display & Design
As the name suggests Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is smaller and lighter than Galaxy S4. It measures 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm and weighs just 107 grams. It comes with a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display which has a 540 x 960 pixels resolution and 256 ppi pixel density. The display supports multitouch and it comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection.
Above the display you have a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera, an earpiece and ambient light & proximity sensors.
At the bottom of the device you have a microphone hole and a micro USB port which can be used for charging your device or for data transfer.
At the top of the device you will find a 3.5 mm audio jack, secondary mic for noise cancellation and a infrared blaster. Yes you can use S4 mini as a remote.
The phone comes with a removable back and once you remove the back cover you can access the battery, 2 SIM card slots and the microSD card slot. Overall Galaxy S4 mini has good build quality and design. It fits in hand quite easily and since it weighs only 107 grams you won’t find it heavy as compare to other smartphones available in the market.
Hardware & Performance
Galaxy S4 Mini is powered by a 1.7 Ghz dual core processor along with Adreno 305 GPU and 1.5 GB of RAM. It comes with 8GB internal storage which can be expanded by using a microSD card of upto 64 GB storage. The device is powerful enough to handle most of your applications and games.
In normal usage the phone does not lag anywhere the interface is quite smooth and all the normal applications run on the device without any problems. Even while playing games like Dead trigger we did not face any lag. But you will face lag in some of the high end games.
Samsung Galaxy S4 runs on latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS along with Samsung TouchWiz UI on top. The TouchWiz UI is more or less same as we have seen in previous Galaxy Devices. There isn’t much to talk about the software part in S4 mini as it is just like previous Galaxy Devices. One thing worth mentioning here is that S4 mini comes with a IR blaster and devices comes with WatchOn app which allows you to use it as a remote.
The phone comes with a 8 megapixel back camera with LED flash. The camera is capable of capturing good images in day light conditions but in low night conditions or at night the camera is not that good. The phone also has a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. Here are some sample images captured using the 8 megapixel back camera present on the device :

The quality of captured images is quite good. The device can be used for capturing images occasionally. In low light conditions specially at night you can get decent images but don’t expect too much from the camera.
Galaxy S4 Mini comes with a 1900mAh removable battery which gives the device a rated talk time of around 12 hours on 3G. The battery can last easily for a day with moderate usage. We used the phone for an entire day and still had around 16% battery left in the device. During the day we made few calls, played videos, browsed internet, downloaded apps and much more. For a normal user the device can easily last for a day which is quite good for a smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is available in India for Rs 25,000 which is bit high according to us. The device has good build quality and the users who don’t want to opt for the Galaxy S4 can surely check out S4 mini. We really liked the battery life and camera of the device.
Though we did not face any kind of lag while using the device but really feel that company should have provided a quad core processor with the device so that the gaming experience could have been better.
