Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo Review
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo was launched in India in Feb 2014. It is a trimmed down version of the highly popular Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The device is now available in India for Rs 35,500 which makes it Rs 6,500 cheaper than the Note 3. So should you opt for this device? And is it worth the price? Read on to find out.
Design & Build Quality
The device design and looks are similar to any other Samsung smartphone available in the market. The device measure 148.4 x 77.4 x 8.6 mm and weighs 162.5 grams. It is comfortable to hold if you have big hands. The front is dominated by a 5.5 inch HD super AMOLED display.
Above the display we have an earpiece, proximity & ambient light sensors, 2 megapixel camera and Samsung Branding just below the earpiece.
Below the display you have usual Samsung style controls – a centrally placed physical home button and two touch buttons – menu and back.
On the left side you have a lone volume rocker and on the right you have a power/lock key. A faux metallic bezel gives the device a premium look and finish.
The phone comes with a faux leather back cover with a faux stitching effect. It has a removable back cover and you need to open the back cover in order to insert the micro SIM and microSD card. At the back You have a 8 megapixel camera along with LED flash and Samsung branding.
At the bottom of the device you have a microphone, micro USB port, speaker grille and S-Pen slot. Unlike Note 3, Note 3 Neo comes with a USB 2.0 port rather than USB 3.0. The phone comes with the Same S-pen stylus as we have seen with Note 3.
A 3.5 mm audio jack, secondary mic for noise cancellation and an IR blaster can be found at the top of the device. The device can be used as a universal remote to control nearly all appliances including TV, setup box, music system etc.
Overall, Note 3 Neo has good build quality. The faux leather back and faux metallix bezel adds to the beauty of the device giving it a more premium look and finish.
The 5.5 inch 720p display of the device is quite good. We did not face any problems related to the touchscreen while using the device. The viewing angles and brightness levels of the device is pretty good.
The sunlight readability is quite decent and we can say that it is one of the best 720p displays you will find in the market.
Hardware & Performance
Talking about the hardware, the phone is powered by a hexa-core processor (Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex A7 & dual-core 1.7 GHz Cortex A15) along with 2GB of RAM and Mali T624 GPU. The device is not as powerful as the Note 3 but it still beats many other high end smartphones available in the market. We did a benchmark test on the device where we performed 3 benchmarks on it – Antutu, Quadran & Nenamark 2. You can find the results below:
According to benchmarks Note 3 Neo is a powerful device but what about real scenario. We decided to test the performance by playing some games on the device. We played 3 games on it – Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 4 and temple run 2.
The device passed the gaming test with flying colors, so you should not worry about the performance of the device. It can easily handle your apps and games with ease. You can run any app/game available for the Android platform on the device without any problems.
Note 3 Neo runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS with Samsung TouchWiz UI on top. Just like Note 3 it has an interesting feature called as Air Command which can be used to perform various tasks using the the S Pen Stylus provided with the device.
The moment you pull out the S Pen you will find a semi circular wheel containing various commands on screen. You can find more about the Air Command feature by watching the video below :
The device supports all the motion control features which we have seen in previous Galaxy Devices such as Air View, Palm Motion, Smart screen etc. It also comes per-installed with various apps like S Health, S translator, WatchON, Evernote, Dropbox etc. So in terms of software the device is similar to Note 3 and does not lack anywhere.
Note 3 Neo comes with a 8 megapixel back camera along with LED flash and a 2 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. Both the cameras are capable of recording full HD 1080p videos at 30fps.
The camera interface is just like usual Samsung camera interface and if you have used any Samsung device you will face no problem while using the interface. Here is a complete video review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo 8 megapixel camera:
Here are 2 sample images captured using the back camera of the device:
Overall, Note 3 Neo has a good camera and the quality of captured images is pretty good specially the macro shots.
Note 3 Neo comes with a removable 3,100 mAh battery. We are really impressed by the battery life of the device as it lasted for an entire day even with heavy usage. During the day we played games, watched videos, browsed internet, made few calls, our 3G was on for entire day (Email, twitter & Facebook in sync mode) but still at the end of the day there was around 15% battery left in the device.
Note 3 Neo is available in India for Rs 35,500 which makes it cheaper than Note 3 by Rs 6,500. You can opt for this device if you are looking for a phablet having good build quality and note taking capabilities.
