Domestic manufacturer Ringing Bells will soon launch a smartphone which costs just 500 INR or $7.3 US. The price is infuriatingly low and redefines standards for entry level handsets in the country.
Entry level Android phones are projected as alternatives for feature phones. For those restricted by a budget, they serve as a solution to allow for basic Android benefits. The company has not provided with details of hardware used in the handset, and we don’t expect it to be any good either.
The only real purpose the handset will serve is to provide Ringing Bell instant national fame, which is indeed priceless for any player trying to enter Indian smartphone market at this stage. This is not the first handset launched by Ringing Bells though. The company earlier launched cheapest 4G handset priced at 2,999 INR.
Ringing Bell Freedom 251 will be launched by Hon’ble Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar on 17th February, 2016.
“The phone will be popularly priced at under Rs 500… this event and launch stands as a true testimony of success of the latest initiatives taken by the Government of India,” states the media invite for the event.
Onslaught of emerging and well-established Chinese players in budget Android market is weighing heavily on many domestic players, who are struggling to keep their heads above water. Will the publicity garnered by delivering “world cheapest handset” give the necessary thrust? Will Ringing Bell be able to sustain that momentum? All these questions will be answered in due time.
