Nokia Lumia 620 Review

Nokia Lumia 620 is one of the affordable Windows Phone out there in the market. Usually people think that the smartphones which comes with a lower price tag lack in performance and features. But Lumia 620 is an exception, despite being an entry level WP8 device it offers much more than its value. So will it be able to stand out of the crowd or it will get lost in the ever growing smartphone market. Read on to find out.

Display & Design

Lumia 620 comes with a 3.8 inch touch screen display and the front part of the device is entirely covered with Glass. The back cover warps around to the front of the device and it is made up of soft touch hard plastic which provides Lumia 620 a solid build quality. The back cover is removable/replaceable and comes in many vibrant colors like lime green, orange, magenta etc. Nokia has used a dual shot technology for making the back panel. This means the shell is made up of two different color layers.

The display has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and you won’t face any problems while using the screen. The touch response and readability of the screen is quite good but it cannot be compared to the high end smartphones like Lumia 820 or Lumia 920.

Above the display you have an earpiece located at the center, a VGA front facing camera, proximity and ambient light sensors.

Below the display you would find the 3 usual Windows Phone touch keys for back, home and search.

There is no key or port present on the left side of the device. At the right side you have a volume rocker, power/lock key and a dedicated camera key.

Hardware & Performance

Nokia Lumia 620 is powered by a 1GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 processor along with 512MB of RAM. The phone comes with Andreno 305 GPU for better graphics and gaming experience. The phone comes with 8GB internal storage which can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 32GB of storage.

The specs are more than enough to run the device smoothly without any lag specially for a Windows Phone. Talking about the connectivity features, it supports 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC. Yes NFC in an entry level smartphone, how cool is that?

There aren’t any benchmarking tools for the Windows Phone so it is difficult to compare it’s performance with other devices. One of the best way to test the performance of any device is by playing games on it. So here is a small video showing the gaming capabilities of the Lumia 620 :

Overall, Lumia 620 is a powerful device and can run nearly all apps and games available on the Windows Store. The only limiting factor here is the 512MB of RAM which won’t allow you to download few games and apps from the Windows store like Temple Run.

Software

Just like other devices in the New Lumia Range from Nokia, Lumia 620 also runs on Windows Phone 8. We have already talked about the Windows Phone 8 features in our Lumia 820 Review. So if you want to look at the WP8 features in detail do check out Lumia 820 review since we won’t be covering those features again in this post in detail but we would just talk about them in brief.

Lumia 620 comes with all the WP8 features like live tiles which can be re-sized as small, medium or large. Lumia 620 also contains all the Nokia specific apps such as Here Drive, Here Maps, Nokia Music etc. These apps makes your experience with the WP8 devices even better.

Camera

Lumia 620 comes with a 5 megapixel auto focus camera at the back along with LED flash and a VGA front facing camera for video calling.

The camera interface of Lumia 620 is like any other Lumia device. It supports all the lenses and comes preloaded with lenses like cinemagraph, panorama and smart shoot. Being an entry level smartphone we were not expecting that the camera on the device would be able to capture good quality images, but we were surprised by the results.

Lumia 620 was able to capture good quality images in bright light conditions and we really the macro shot capability of the device. Here are few sample images captured using the Lumia 620 5 megapixel back camera :

Here is a panorama shot taken using the Panorama app present on the Lumia 620:

The quality of images in low light conditions specially at night are poor even with the flash on. The camera is capable of recording HD videos (720p @ 30fps).

Battery Life

Lumia 620 comes with  1300mAh battery which has a rated talk time of around 10 hours on 3G.

Just like other Lumia devices Lumia 620 also has a battery saver mode which gets turned on in case the battery level drops below 20%. With moderate usage the battery would easily last for a day.

Conclusion

Lumia 620 is one of the best entry level smartphones available in the market. The device has awesome build quality and design. In terms of performance this is one of the most powerful devices we have seen in this price segment. No Lag, No delay and absolutely smooth interface. Talking about the Camera, we never expected an entry level smartphone to have a good quality camera but Lumia 620 proved us wrong. Device is capable of capturing good quality images and amazing macro shots.

Just like other WP8 devices this also lacks few famous apps and the WP 8 Apps ecosystem still needs development. This is no doubt that Lumia 620 is one of the best devices you can buy if you budget is between 10-15K INR.

Pros:

  • Solid build quality
  • Great Performance
  • Good Camera
  • Value for money

Cons:

  • Lack of apps
  • Limited 512MB RAM (Can’t Download some Games)
  • Smaller screen Size
