Design & Build Quality

Aqua 4x design is just like most of the Android smartphones available in the market but has a great build quality. There is no doubt that it is one of the best smartphones in terms of build quality in this price segment. The front is dominated by a 4 inch display which has a resolution of 480×800 pixels. The display is decent with good touch response and brightness levels.

Above the display you have an earpiece and a VGA front facing camera for video calling. Usually companies avoid front camera in entry level devices but we are glad that Intex decided to provide it in Aqua 4X.

Below the display you have usual Android touch buttons – menu, home and back. You will also find a loud speaker below the touch keys.

On the right side you have a volume rocker and power/lock key. You don’t have any buttons/ports on the other side.

You can locate a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro USB port at the top of the phone. At the bottom, you just have a primary mic for voice calling.

Moving to the back, Aqua 4X comes a matte finish back. You can remove the back panel and underneath it you will find a 1,300 mAh battery, two SIM card slots and a micro SD slot. There is a 2 megapixel camera along with LED flash on the back. Usually you won’t find the LED flash in this price segment, so it is an added advantage.

Just by looking or holding the device, no user can say it is a 3,000 INR device. It feels much better than other devices in this price segment. Overall, we really liked the build quality of Intex Aqua 4X.

Hardware & Performance

The phone is powered by a 1 Ghz dual core processor along with 4GB internal storage and 256 MB RAM. It is a decent device in terms of performance and supports multitasking but it is better to avoid it as it makes the phone slow and laggy due to limited RAM. Out of 4 GB storage only 125 MB is available for the user but don’t worry it supports microSD card to expand the storage.

In normal usage Aqua 4X does not lag but opening/closing of apps takes some time. Also when you unlock the device there is a noticeable lag. Even with 256 MB RAM it can be used to play some low end games like Angry Gorilla and they work fine without any problems. It is better than the firefox smartphones in terms of performance. Talking about the connectivity features, it supports 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Aqua 4x runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS which is now outdated. Company might release an upgrade for Android 4.3 but higher than that is very unlikely. Company has made no modifications in the OS, so that you can enjoy Stock Android experience. People who are going to use it as their first smartphone won’t be disappointed.

Camera Quality

The phone comes with a 2 megapixel back camera and VGA front facing camera. The camera comes with 3 modes – Normal, panorama and Auto capture. In auto capture it tries to capture an image whenever a smile is detected. Surprisingly, it comes with a LED flash so you can try capturing some images even in low light conditions.

Here are sample images taken using the 2 megapixel back camera :

Overall, the camera quality is average for an entry level device.

Battery Life

Aqua 4X comes with a 1,300 mAh battery which has a rated talk time of around 3 hours. In our test the device easily lasted for an entire day with moderate usage.

Intex Aqua 4X is available in India for Rs 2,999 on It is one of the best smartphones in this price segment. We highly recommend this device to users who are going to use it as their first smartphone or who are willing to switch from feature phone to smartphone.
