In a world where “there are only so many ways you can put a rectangle” and “That looks like an iPhone” are common tech phrases, once in a while we do come across a refreshingly unique Android handset that’s jaw dropping beautiful and rekindles our faith in the creative powers flowing through the universe. Huawei’s new premium and compact flagship – the P9 – is one such elegant and stylish handset.
The Huawei P9 is crafted from aerospace-grade Aluminum metal and puts on show a beautiful sandblasted matte finish with Premium diamond cut edges. The subtly curved 2.5D glass classes up the front of the P9, and is complemented by a vivid and crisp Full HD panel that runs almost edge to edge.
It’s astonishing that Huawei has managed to restrict the thickness to just 7mm, even when there are two camera modules sitting flush with the back cover! Yes, surprisingly, there is no ugly camera bump on the back – a feat which even phones like LG G5, iPhone 6S or even the iPhone 7 Plus failed to accomplish.
The dual camera set-up on the rear sits underneath a luxurious glass plating which also conceals the top antenna band. The glass panel has fine grey line texture running through it and the Leica branding sits on the far right.
It is this meticulous attention to such details that makes the Huawei P9 irresistibly gorgeous. Besides the dual 12MP Leica cameras (one monochrome and one normal), this black strip also cloaks Laser AF and houses a dual tone LED flash.
Just where your index finger would naturally rest, Huawei has mounted a fingerprint reader that’s extremely fast, accurate and secure. The rest of the back is clean, and the Aluminium continuity is only broken by the second plastic Antenna band strip and Huawei branding lying close to the bottom.
The back isn’t completely flat but artistically curves towards the edges, further helping with a firm grip.
The USB Type-C port, speaker grills, and 3.5mm audio jack are all housed on the bottom edge. On the top edge, Huawei has only placed the secondary microphone for noise cancellation.
The right edge makes room for the metallic power button and volume rocker. The hybrid SIM tray that accepts two Nano SIM cards or a Nano SIM card and MicroSD card is placed on the left edge.
On the front surface, right above the display, you will find an earpiece flanked by notification LED and 8MP front selfie camera. Below the display sits the Huawei Logo.
The Huawei P9 is compact, light (144 grams) and classy but in no way feels fragile. It offers a very firm grip, ideal for the frequent use as a camera, and feels very solid in hands. Besides, you get to choose from 4 different color options – Titanium Grey, Prestige Gold, Rose Gold, and Mystic Silver.
We must admit, that the Huawei P9 feels like the most stylish yet ergonomically designed handset that we have tested in a while. A beautiful design and a wonderful camera are attributes that instantly draw everyday consumers and Huawei scores massive, clear-cut victories on both fronts with its new and elegant P9.
