Huawei Honor 4X: Is it worth Buying?

There was a time when the world was not even aware of the fact that Huawei has started making smartphones until the company started to roll out the Honor series. Slowly and slowly, Huawei Honor smartphones started making news and soon the news turned into buzz. Not only news, devices like Honor Holly were selling like hot cakes.

Huawei understood the fact it has to compete with the big names like Motorola, Lenovo, Asus and Xiaomi. And, for remaining in the competition, it has to come up with a device which offers some amazing features and is affordable. The result of this is Honor 4X. It is a Dual SIM phone which supports 4G on both the SIMs. Let’s see whether Honor 4X is capable of surviving the ever demanding smartphone market or not.

Recently we did the unboxing of Honor 4X, watch the video below to find out the contents of the Indian Retail Unit:

Design and Display

There is nothing much to talk about the design of the phone as the device has got standard design like any other android smartphone. Although, the textured pattern on the rear cover do look unique but, it is not something to go crazy about. It is a huge device at 8.7mm thickness and weighs 165gm. Since it has got a 5.5 inch display, using it with one hand is not easy.

The power button and volume buttons are on the right side of the phone. It is currently available in two colors, black and white. The strange thing about the white color model is that the power button is black in color while the volume button is white, which makes it weird in looks. Although, there is no such mismatch in black color model.

Unlike most of the devices, the speakers are on the bottom side of the phone along with the Micro USB port and a microphone. There is a 3.5mm jack and another microphone on top of the device. The back of the phone is complete plastic with a small metal strip featuring the camera and flash in the top left corner. The word Honor is printed on the plastic back and there is no other branding on the phone.

The phone features 5.5 inch IPS LCD display with a pixel resolution of 720×1280 pixels and pixel density of 267ppi. The screen delivers decent picture quality and color saturation and has got average viewing angles. There are buttons on the bottom of the screen but they are not backlit which means it would be hard to locate them in the dark. Another downside of the screen is that it does not use any kind of glass for protection.  So, you will have to use either a tampered glass or screen protector for keeping your display safe and scratch free.

The phone is powered by 64 bit chipset with 1.2 GHz Quad Core Snapdragon 410 Cortex A-53 processor which is supported with Adreno 306 graphics card. It is equipped with a 2GB of RAM thus multitasking is not a problem with the phone.

You can expect good multi-tasking with heavy gaming without any lag.  The phone offers 8GB of internal storage out of which 4.05 GB is available for user. The storage can be expanded up to 32GB by using external microSD card.

The phone offers 13MP rear camera with LED flash. The camera offers various modes like Panorama, Watermark, HDR, Audio Note, All focus etc. However the focus is slow and it shows problem while adjusting in sunlight. Sometimes  you will have to take 3-4 images before you can get that perfect shot. Watch the video below for a detailed camera review:

Although, the front camera is a total opposite story. There is a 5 MP front camera which delivers detailed selfies. The beauty level mode allows you to beautify your face which results in perfect selfies.

However, the camera app covers up the rear camera issues as it offers large number of filters, manual ISO setting, white balance and other image tweaks which if used in a proper way can yield a good image.

The phone runs on Android 4.4 out of the box and features company’s own Emotion UI 3.0 on the top. Just like other Honor devices, there is no app drawer in Honor 4X and all the apps are spread on the home screen itself. A simple upward swipe form the bottom of the screen shows music controls and shortcuts to apps like camera, calculator, torch and power saving mode.

The main disappointing thing about Honor 4X is that it does not allow to download any new themes. The phone comes with six themes pre-installed in the device with different icons, fonts, sounds, styles and wallpaper. You can customize the theme but, can’t download a new one.

The phone also features gesture controls which are shake to arrange icons, flip to mute etc. The notification manager allows you to manage notifications for each apps. There are three different power saving modes which can be easily accessed from the notification manager.

Battery and Connectivity

The phone is backed up by a powerful 3000 mAh battery which is the strongest point of this device. The phone can last up to a day with normal which makes it a good powerful phone considering other phones which only lasts up to 10-12 hours. The phone supports 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Pricing and Availability

Honor 4X is priced at INR 10,499 and is available in Black and White color. It is exclusively available only on Flipkart. You will get many amazing offers with these phones which include offers from Freecharge, and Hungama.

Final Verdict

At this price, you can get Yu Yureka, Redmi Note, Asus Zenfone 5 and Lenovo A7000. However, Honor 4x is the only device which offers 4G on both the SIMs. If you are looking for a phone with bigger display and strong battery life with decent camera performance, you can go for Honor 4x.
