Huawei, one of the leading mobile companies in the world unveiled a mid range Smartphone Ascend G6 in February during the Mobile World Congress. The phone is available in India for Rs 12,500 which makes it a direct competitor to mobiles like Moto G, Xiaomi Mi 3 etc. So is it better than other devices in the same price range? And is it worth buying? Read on to find out.
Design & Build Quality
Ascend G6 comes with a plastic body with Metallic finish frame around the edges. The phone has rounded bottom edge, measures 7.5 mm in thickness and weighs around 115 grams. The frond of the device is dominated by a 4.5 inch IPS LCD display. Above the display you have a massive 5 megapixel camera, an earpiece, proximity & ambient light sensors. Below the display you have three usual touch buttons for navigation – back, home and menu button.
Talking about the display, company has provided a qHD (540x960p) IPS display in the device which is quite decent. It is not as good as a 720p display in terms of sharpness but the IPS display provides you good viewing angles, brightness level and moderate sunlight readability.
Company has provided a 3.5 mm audio jack at the bottom of the device. It might cause problems to the users who keep their devices in pocket while listening to music on headphones. At the top of the device you have a micro USB port which can be used to charge your device as well as for data transfer.
On the right side you have power/lock key and a volume rocker and you don’t have any buttons or ports on the other side. The phone comes with a removable plastic back cover which has a matte finish. Once you open the back cover you will notice a 2,000 mAh non removable battery, micro SIM card slot and a micro SD card slot.
The back of the device features a 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and a speaker outlet. Overall, Ascend G6 has good build quality & design. We liked the sleekness of the device and the metallic frame around the edges which gives it a premium look & finish.
Hardware & Performance
Huawei Ascend G6 is powered by a 1.2 Ghz quad core processor along with 1 GB of RAM. We didn’t face any kind of lag or slowness while navigating through the home screens or while opening or closing the applications. The device comes with 4 GB of internal storage out of which just 1.83 GB is available to the user. You can increase the storage by using a micro SD card of up to 32 GB storage.
We performed few benchmark tests of the device and it scored 17,342 in Antutu Benchmark which is a pretty decent score for a device in this price range. We also played Asphalt 8 on the device and to our surprise the game ran pretty smoothly without any lag or slowness.
The loudspeaker present on the device is loud and clear and the phone offers good call quality. We are able to play all the popular video and audio formats on the device without any issues. The device can easily handle most of your apps & gaming needs.
The phone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS along with Huawei’s Emotion UI 2.0 Lite on top. The UI keeps all applications on the home screens and you can have maximum 9 home screens. It comes with 4 preloaded themes but you can download more themes. The phone comes with lot of preloaded apps but one app which is worth mentioning is the Phone Manager which allows optimizes your phone’s performance.
Phone Manager app allows the user to clean trash & cache files, close unnecessary apps and control app permissions. A swipe down from top will open the notification tray which contains quick toggle buttons for various settings and all your notifications. Overall, software present on Ascend G6 is at par with other Android smartphones available in the market.
Asceng G6 comes with a 8 megapixel back camera with LED flash and a 5 megapixel front facing camera. The camera interface is simple, easy to use and offers various modes like Normal, Smart, Beauty, HDR, Panorama etc. Here are some sample images taken using the back camera of the device:
The phone also has a 5 megapixel secondary camera which is one of the front facing camera we have seen in this price range. It has a wide angle lens so that you can capture group selfies and timer for capturing perfect selfies. Overall, Huawei Ascend G6 has decent back camera and a good front facing camera.
Huawei Ascend G6 comes with a 2,000 mAh non removable battery which is quite good. With heavy usage the battery lasted for an entire day during which we watched a 90 minute movie on the device, made few voice calls, played games for 30 minutes and our 3G was on for the entire day (Facebook, Twitter & Email apps in sync mode).
Huawei Ascend G6 is now available in India for Rs 12,500 which makes it a good choice for the users looking for a mid range smartphone. The device has good build quality & design, excellent camera and good battery life but at the same time there are few other devices in the market which are better than Ascend G6 in terms of performance and display. We will recommend this device to the users looking for a sleek & compact device with great front camera to take selfies.
