Google Chromecast Review

Just imagine if you could directly stream YouTube videos on your TV. Although, it is possible as you just need to connect your laptop with your PC via a HDMI cable. But, it is even possible without wiring. The tech giant, Google has come up with a small device which can connect your PC to your TV over Wi-Fi. However, it was launched all across the world in 2013 but, in India it was launched in 2014 during the Great Online Shopping Festival. In this post, we will discuss about the use of this device and whether you should buy it or not.

What is Google Chromecast?

It is basically a device like a pendrive which connects to TV using its HDMI port. There is a micro-USB port on the back side of the device which is used to power the Chromecast. You will get a charging cable and an HDMI extender cable in the box. As we said, it looks like a pend drive and it is just a little bit bigger than your thumb.

One of the best thing about this device is its design. The device looks classy and it feels like a premium gadget. It is sleek, perfectly finished and even when you use it, it will give you a feeling of using a way too costly gadget. There is branding on one side of the device which also looks elegant. Since the device is small in size, it can easily be put into pocket or wallet whenever you want to carry it.

How do Chromecast works?

The device connects automatically to your home Wi-Fi in few simple steps. Just connect it with your TV and you will get a simple “how to” guide to connect it. Once it is done, you can easily stream videos from other gadgets on the same Wi-Fi to the Chromecast.

If you wish to play YouTube videos on your TV, then go to YouTube on a connected PC or phone and just press the cast button. Instead of being downloaded on to your device, it will be streamed directly on the TV. There are many apps which works perfectly fine with this device. Although, we don’t have Hulu and Netflix in India, but still there are many apps which support Chromecast.

In case, you wish to play certain content on your TV but it is not supported by Chromecast, then there is no need to worry. You can use the screen mirroring feature. It allows you to duplicate any type of content from your phone to your TV. You will need a device with Android 4.4.2 or later. After that, you will need to launch the Chromecast app from your phone and tap the “Cast Screen” button. Let the magic happen on its own.

You can browse Facebook, play games, watch pictures etc. Although, we would not suggest you to play games using Chromecast as there is a small amount of lag, say a half second, which will affect your gaming experience. You can also play the content of your PC onto your TV with this method. All you need is a Chromecast extension and it’s done.

Chromecast improves your video watching experience by allowing you to watch videos on a big screen. Apart from that, it can also be used to watch the content you have on your Hard Disk Drive. All you need is Plex. It is a server which needs to be set up on the device. Once it is done, you can use Plex app on your phone to play the videos on TV. In this case, mobile phone acts like a remote. VLC and MX player support is also going to come soon. You can also play some cool games by suing this device where the phone become the controller. There are many games available for Chromecast. Click here to know more about apps supported by Chromecast.
