Gionee has been in the Indian markets since quite some time now. They released their first phone i.e. Dream D1 which was an amazing phone with some good specifications. They have been releasing all sorts of phones in different categories and price ranges.
Gionee has a signature Marathon series in which they launch phones that have amazing battery life. The Gionee Marathon M5, which was released recently signifies the same thing as it comes with two huge batteries of 3010 mAh each which make the total to 6020 mAh which means you can get an amazing battery life on this phone. This post is a quick review of the phone and we will see how well this phone fairs in all the tests.
Design & Build
The phone has two battery and both of them pack a punch and you can see that when you hold the device. The phone is quite heavy and is a bit thicker than most phones in this range out there. But build wise, this phone feels quite solid. It comes with an aluminium back and is covered with plastic which has a matte finish on the edges. The design is simple yet good looking. The phone weighs around 211 grams which make the phone bit heavy as mentioned before.
The front of the phone has a screen of size 5.5-inch. This is an AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Above the display, you will find the front facing camera and the sensors along with an earpiece. There are three touch capacitive buttons below the screen which will be used for navigation on the phone.
The backside of the phone has an aluminium back with matte finish plastic above and below the aluminium cover. You will also find the primary camera with flash and a small mic hole. The speaker grill is on the lower side of the back and is quite wide. The top of the phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack and an Infrared Blaster for the universal remote. The microUSB port is at the bottom of the phone.
As mentioned before, this phone has a display of 5.5 inches and the panel Gionee has used is an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Some people will miss the presence of a 1080p display but with a 720p AMOLED display, the battery capacity of 6020 mAh will produce amazing results.
The display is good to look at but it is not as sharp as other 1080p displays. The display looks vivid and has great viewing angles. It is good enough for watching videos/movies, reading text or for playing games.
The primary camera on the Gionee Marathon M5 is a 13MP shooter which is supported by a flash for low light conditions. The pictures take from the primary camera were good and they contained a lot of details. The color reproduction is also good but the auto focus is a bit slow. The camera software itself is very feature loaded with features like ultra-pixel, pic note etc.
The front facing camera has a sensor of 5MP and it is decent enough to be used as a selfie camera. The software features of the camera app will let the person using it to take good quality pictures.
We have to address the elephant in the room, right? This phone has not one but two batteries that can fit inside the phone and these two batteries together provide a huge battery capacity of 6020 mAh. As per Gionee, this phone can provide a 28 hours talk time on 3G networks and a stand-by time of up to 684 hours!
This is actually expected from a battery of this capacity. There are definitely no complaints when it comes to battery on this phone. Even with heavy usage the phone lasted for more than 2 days. For most of the users the battery will easily last around 3-4 days.
Hardware & Performance
The phone is powered by a 1.3 Ghz quad core Mediatek MT6735 processor and a Mali-T760 GPU. The processor is backed up by 3GB RAM. This phone has an internal storage of 32 GB and it can be expanded up to 128 GB using a microSD card.
We didn’t face any performance related issues during day to day operations or while running daily apps like Twitter, Facebook, Google Chrome etc. The device can even handle high end gaming but we did face minor issues in those games.
Gionee has skinned the Android OS on the phone just like other phones they produce and they have applied their Amigo 3.1 UI on it to provide some extra features. Thankfully this phone doesn’t come with any bloat other than basic apps required in the Amigo 3.1 UI and the software on this phone is fast and snappy. Under the hood, its Android 5.1 and the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will be provided by Gionee in near future.
At the price tag of Rs. 17,999, Marathon M5 might not be the most powerful smartphone in this price segment but the main selling point of this phone is the battery. It comes with a huge 6,020 mAh battery which provides a very impressive battery life. The phone performs well, comes with a good build quality and has a good back camera. Overall, if you are looking for a smartphone with the best battery life then you can definitely opt for Marathon M5.
