Gionee Dream D1 Review

These days Indian mobile phone market is growing at a rapid rate. In the past we have seen many new mobile manufacturer entering the Indian markets and Gionee is one of the new entrant in the Indian mobile phone industry. Last month they launched their flagship Android smartphone Dream D1 in India.

Dream D1 comes with additional accessories such as screen protector and back covers. Recently we did the unboxing of Dream D1, so do check out the post if you want to see all the contents of the Dream D1 retail package. The mobile offers features of an high end smartphone at a much lower price. So would it be able to stand against the existing smartphones in the market or it would just get lost in the ever growing smartphone market.

Display & Design

Dream D1 is a sleek and light device which measures just 8.66 in thickness and weighs around 140 grams. The device comes in only 1 color i.e black but you also get 2 additional snap covers with device in case you want to change the look and feel of the device. In the front you have a 4.65 inch super Amoled display protected by gorilla glass 2 protection. The Dream D1 costs around Rs 16,000 in India and you are getting a super Amoled display at such a price point, amazing isn’t ?

The device does not have any physical touch buttons since the lower part of the display offers virtual navigation controls. The display quality is pretty good and we didn’t facing any problems while using the touch screen and it works smoothly.

Above the display you have an ambient light sensor, earpiece and a 1 megapixel front facing camera for video calling.

At the top of the device you have a lone microUSB port. Yea you read it right unlike other smartphones which have microUSB port at the bottom this device has a microUSB port at the top.

If you are wondering where did the 3.5mm audio jack, it is present at the bottom of the device along with a microphone.

On the right, you have a volume rocker and nothing else. There is no dedicated camera key present on the right side.

On the left you have a power/lock key which is bit inconvenient to use as just like me most of the users have always used a smartphone which has a power key on the right or at the top.

At the back you have a 8 megapixel camera along with LED flash, Gionee Branding at the bottom and a speaker.

Underneath the back panel you have 2 slots for the SIM cards. Yes, it is a dual SIM Android smartphone. You also have a microSD card present along with SIM slot and a non removable battery. Overall, the device has a good build quality and feels quite solid in hand. Very few companies provide such great build quality at such a lower price point.

Hardware & Performance

Gionee Dream D1 comes with a 1.2Ghz Mediatek MT6589 quad core processor along with 1GB of RAM. It comes with 1GB internal storage and a free 16GB microSD card. The specs are powerful enough and we did not face any lag while using the device. We played few games on the device to test the performance of the device. Here is the gaming test video we performed on the Dream D1:

As you might have seen in the above video, the device is quite powerful and you can play nearly all the games on the device without any lag or problems. The only bad feature we didn’t mentioned in the video is that after around 20-25 minutes of gaming the device started heating up. But it should not be an issue as the heat levels remain under control.

The device is powerful enough to handle your most of the needs, daily tasks and can handle multi tasking with ease. Talking about the connectivity features device supports 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Software

Dream D1 comes runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS with custom UI installed on top of it. The default theme is bit laggy as compare to the default Android theme, fortunately there is a thee switcher present on the device in case you want to switch back to Stock Android theme. Many users won’t feel the lag in the custom theme unless they switch back to the Stock theme.

One thing worth mentioning here is that though the theme itself feels bit slow it does not affect the performance of any app. All the apps run smoothly even on the custom theme. Dream D1 comes pre-loaded with loads of apps such as Facebook, Twitter, NQ Mobile Security etc.

Camera

Gionee Dream D1 comes with 8 megapixel camera at the back with LED flash. The camera offers a variety of features and modes including HDR which is usually found in the camera on the high end smartphones.

Here are few sample images taken from the 8 MP camera present on Dream D1:

The image quality is average, you would be able to capture decent images but don’t expect too much from the camera. The camera is capable of recording Full HD videos @ 30fps. The device also has a 1 MP front facing camera for video calling.

Battery Life

The device comes with 2100mAh non removable battery. The battery can last easily for a day with moderate usage.

Gionee Dream D1 back panel removed

We used the device for the entire day and there was 18% battery still left in it at the end of the day. During the day we made few calls, browsed internet, watched a video on Youtube and our 3G connection was on for the entire day (Facebook, Twitter and Gmail apps were running and using the 3G connection).

Conclusion

The device is available in India at a best buy price of around Rs 16,000 which makes it a mid range smartphone. But if we look at the features it gives competition to the high end smartphone. The phone would be a good choice for the users looking for powerful device with great specs but a lower price tag.The device has many plus points such as hardware, design, display but at the same point does not come with an impressive camera.

One doubt which we have about the company is about their after sales support. Since we have seen many new smartphone manufacturers in India which have very few service centers in India and have a poor after sales support. We hope Gionee would soon open service centers across various cities in India and provide an awesome after sales support which would help them in making their hold in the Indian smartphone market better.

Pros:

  • Good Display
  • Powerful Specs
  • Great Build Quality

Cons:

  • Average Camera
  • Pre-installed Theme is bit slow

  1. Pretty detailed and nice review. Keep up the good work!! However please focus on clicking colorful things, so that maximum judgement one may be able to take out for camera quality.
