Social Network Facebook which has more than billion users worldwide has officially announced that now more than 500 million users are using Facebook messenger app globally.
Peter Martinazzi , Director of product management of Facebook, said, “Messaging is an important part of how people stay connected and since Messenger launched in 2011 we’ve been passionate about giving people a faster and more expressive way to communicate.”
“We’ve also continued to improve speed and reliability. Updates to Messenger ship every two weeks so it continues to evolve and improve.” he stated.
This year Facebook has separated messenger app from its main app. Earlier, it used to be optional to use main Facebook app or messenger app for sending messages, but few months ago it became compulsory to use messenger app for chatting.
With this messenger app, users can send messages & videos, chat with groups, send photos & stickers, making free calls & take selfies.
Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Facebook, explained that why we were forced to download the standalone Messenger app- “Messaging is one of the few things people do more than social networking. In some countries 85 percent of people are on Facebook, but 95 percent of people use SMS or messaging. Asking folks to install another app is a short term painful thing, but if we wanted to focus on serving this [use case] well, we had to build a dedicated and focused experience.”
The Facebook messenger app has currently rated at 4.5 stars based on more than 10 million votes on Play Store. While on Apple App store the current version has slightly lower rating of 1.5 stars.
Facebook is very serious about making its reputation as a world class messenger. The messenger app is being updated regularly with new features & bug fixes. The Social network app also acquired WhatsApp which now enjoys more than 600 million active users. With the ongoing smartphone boom in emerging markets this number is expected to grow rapidly.
