Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Review

These days people prefer to buy an Ultrabook rather than a bulky and boring looking laptop. This is because Ultrabooks are slim & light weight as compare to normal laptops. But now people want something more slimmer and easy to carry. The device that satisfy their needs is the Tablet. Tablet is much more easier to carry than a Ultrabook. So why don’t all the people just buy a tablet instead of a Laptop? Answer is simple tablet cannot perform all the tasks that an ultrabook or the laptop can perform.

Dell XPS 12 is undoubtedly one of the most beautifully designed ultrabook available in the market. It is made from a combination of carbon fiber and aluminum. The lid and the base both are made of carbon fiber.

The edges are made of aluminum which adds to the beauty & strength of the device. The device weighs around 1.5kg which is bit heavy for a tablet but ideal for an ultrabook.

The screen flipping mechanism is quite simple and smooth. The screen screen swivels inside its silver bezel. It rotates around two hinges and can be made to rotate 180 degree and use as a tablet. The screen is held at its position using magnets to avoid unintentional dislodging.

It is fun to play with the screen and on the first day when we got the laptop we kept rotating the screen. After rotating the screen outward the laptop looks like a defective model where the company accidentally attached the screen to the laptop in wrong manner. You can also you it to play prank with your friends. Yea you guessed it right we did the same and it was so much fun.

Talking first about display, XPS 12 comes with a 12.5 inch full HD display which is protected by corning gorilla glass. So you don’t need to worry about your display getting scratched. though we still recommend you to use a screen protector.

The display is simply amazing, it is a delight for movie buffs. The touch of the display is quite responsive and it as good as any other Tablet available in he market. Above the display you have a 1.3 megapixel webcam along with two microphones. Below the display you just have a centrally located physical windows button.

XPS 12 comes with a Chiclet style keyboard. It is a backlit keyboard & automatically adjusts the brightness depending upon the ambient light. The keys are well spaced out and it is a delight to use the keyboard. It is one of best keyboards we have seen in any ultrabook we have used.

Talking about the touch pad, XPS 12 has a multi-touch touchpad. It has a rubberized surface which makes the touchpad smooth and accurate. Mouse buttons are present at the lower end of the touchpad.

On the left side of the ultrabook a screen orientation lock, a combined 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack, spring action power button with status LED, a volume rocker and a speaker outlet.

The ultrabook definitely belongs to the premium segment and it has an amazing build quality. It is undoubtedly one of the best Ultrabooks we have ever seen in terms of  Design. The only thing which bothers us is the missing SD card reader which would have allowed the camera users to quickly copy the files to the device.

Hardware & Performance

The first thing which we noticed while booting up the device was the boot time. It has an amazing 9 seconds boot time due to the fact that it uses a SSD. The ultrabook runs on Windows 8 and it is powered by a Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7 GHz processor along with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. It comes with 128GB SSD storage.

XPS 12 is quite fast and there is no lag whatsoever. Even while running multiple applications you won’t face any kind of lag. The display is good, touchscreen is quite responsive and the on screen board is easy to use while using the ultrabook as a tablet. Talking about the audio quality, the speakers are pretty loud and clear.

The device comes with Intel on board HD Graphics 4000 GPU which is decent for playing moderate level games. If you are thinking of playing the high end games on this ultrabook then the ultrabook might get few hiccups while running them. We ran few benchmarking tests on the device and here are the results:

First of all we ran the default Windows Experience Index on the laptop.

windows experience index

The lowest scoring component is the Graphics, as we already mentioned the ultrabook comes with an on board graphics card so you can’t expect high performance from it. Still 5.4 is a decent score which indicates you can play the moderate level games without any issues. We also ran 3DMark 11 and PCMark 7 Tests on the device. Here are the results:

3d11

pc mark 7

The device scored 579 in 3DMark 11 test and 4716 in PCMark 7 test. These are quite decent score and it indicates that Dell XPS 12 is a powerful system capable of running moderate level games and it can handle multitasking with ease.

Dell XPS 12 comes with a 6 cell Lithium Ion Battery. We ran a battery benchmark test on the device so see how good is the battery life.

battery test

With full Load on CPU the battery lasted for around 3 hours 43 minutes. That is quite impressive. So with moderate usage the battery could easily last for around 6-7 hours.

Conclusion

Dell XPS 12 costs around Rs 93,000 in India which makes it a bit costly ultrabook But if you see the features it offers we feel that the price is justified. The ultrabook has amazing build quality and great design. It is one of the most beautifully designed ultrabooks we have seen. The full HD 12.5 inch display is simply gorgeous and the touch is quite responsive. It has nearly all the necessary ports but lacks a SD card slot & Ethernet port.

The device is pretty powerful and capable of handling your daily tasks, moderate level games and multitasking with ease. At 1.5kg the device is quite light in weight but still it is bit heavy for one hand operation while using it as a tablet. We would recommend the ultrabook to the users who are looking for a premium convertible tablet and we are pretty sure that they would be delighted with this device.

Pros:

  • Excellent build quality
  • Good Design
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Performance
  • Responsive Touchscreen

Cons:

  • No SD card slot
  • No Ethernet port
