Coolpad Note 5 Review – A Fully loaded phone

You cannot call Coolpad one of the underdogs of the smartphone market in India. We can easily say that Coolpad has been revolutionizing the budget smartphone category in India.

Coolpad has been releasing some really good phones recently in India and the Coolpad Note 5 was announced back in September 2016. The phone came at a price of Rs. 10,999 which is in the middle of currently the hottest price range in which smartphones sell in India.

The phone comes with a full HD screen, powerful Snapdragon processor but how exactly does the phone work in real life? Let’s find that out in this review of the Coolpad Note 5.

Coolpad Note 5: Design & Build

The design of this phone is decent and it might not be the best-looking smartphone in the market but it surely does offer great build quality. The front of the phone sports a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display with a 2.5D glass on top. You can see the earpiece, front facing camera along with other sensors right above the screen and below the screen, you will find the three touch-sensitive buttons for navigation on the phone.

The back of the phone has the 13 MegaPixel primary camera along with the flash. Above the camera, you will find a microphone that is used while capturing videos and below the camera, there is a fingerprint sensor.

There is a Coolpad branding and speaker grill on the lower back side of the phone and you will see shiny golden lines traversing the top and lower side of the phone which make the phone look great.

Left side of the phone feels empty with only the volume rockers present on the side and on the right side you will find the hybrid SIM tray along with the Power/Lock & Unlock button.

The top edge of the phone has a 3.5mm audio jack and bottom edge is a place for the micro USB connector for the phone. The phone feels sturdy and the presence of metal on the phone makes it tough.

Coolpad Note 5: Display & Camera

As mentioned, the phone has a 5.5-inch full HD display which transforms into a pixel density of 401ppi. The panel used here is an IPS panel which means the colors are supposed to be bright and they do. The display is sharp and really good to look at.

Coming to the cameras on this thing, the phone has two cameras. The rear primary camera is a 13MP shooter and has a flash to support it in low light and dark conditions. The 8MP front facing camera is also good for taking selfies and for video calling purposes. The best thing about the 8MP front camera is that it comes with a flash so taking selfies in dark places won’t be a problem with this phone.

The quality of the images shot from cameras on this phone is good. They are able to perform well even in low light conditions and even the Camera app on the phone is good enough to support these cameras. If you are a selfie lover, you will really like the Coolpad Note 5 due to a front flash which allows users to capture good quality selfies in low light conditions like restaurants.

Coolpad Note 5: Software, Performance & Battery life

The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Coolpad’s very own CoolU UI 8.0 skin on top. This skin adds a lot of new features to Android 6.0. Features like Dual Accounts allow you to have two instances of WhatsApp, Facebook etc. running at the same time. Overall the software works well and is smooth to operate.

The phone performs extremely well as it comes loaded with some great specifications. 1.5Ghz Snapdragon 617 processor along with 4GB RAM is supposed to provide you a great performance. In the gaming department, games can take advantage of the Adreno 405 GPU and the 4GB RAM on the phone to produce amazing graphics and a smooth frame rate.

We didn’t face any lag or slowness while using the smartphone. The phone was able to handle heavy multi-tasking and gaming without any issues. Even though the phone uses Snapdragon 617 processor we didn’t notice any major heating issue with it.

But does this phone have enough battery for such high specifications? Yes, it does. The phone has a battery of 4010 mAh which is good enough to provide more than enough juice to the phone. The phone can easily go through a day with heavy usage.

The Verdict

Coolpad is one of the known and best smartphone player in sub 15k INR category in India. With Coolpad Note 5 they have again proved that they are serious about bringing best devices at affordable prices.

The phone brings some surprisingly good specifications and offers tough competition to phones like Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. It is a very good buy at a price tag of Rs. 10,999 and personally I think if you want a device with a great camera, good performance, and impressive battery life then Coolpad Note 5 can be a good choice.
