Coolpad is the latest company to enter in the Indian smartphone market. The company recently launched two devices in India – Dazen X7 and Dazen 1. While Dazen X7 is targeted for the mid-range segment, Dazen 1 will compete with devices like Moto E 2nd Gen. and Redmi 2. Dazen 1 is priced at INR 5,999 and Coolpad is trying to establish itself in the most competitive price segment in Indian smartphone market. So, the question is now whether Dazen 1 will be able to compete against the big names like Motorola, Lenovo, and Xiaomi. And is it worth buying? Read on to find out.
Design and Look
The phone is made up of high-quality plastic that doesn’t feel cheap or weird. It is complete black on the front side and has got the white cover on the back side of the phone that is very common these days. The back panel is removable and has got a soft matte finish.
The phone has got curved edges which make it ergonomic in design. Despite having a plastic body, the phone is bit heavy at 155gm. The back cover is not scratch/dust or fingerprint proof which is the reason back panel gets stained very easily.
Rest things are at their right place. The power button is on the right, volume rocker on the left, audio jack on top and USB port on the bottom.
The phone comes with an 8 megapixel back camera with LED flash. The back of the phone has a loudspeaker outlet, Coolpad and Dazen branding. It comes with usual Android touch buttons present below the display. There is nothing special or out of the box about the design but Dazen 1 does have one of the best build quality we have seen in this price segment.
Dazen 1 features a 5 inch HD IPS display with pixel density of 320ppi and 1280×720 pixels resolution. It has got an advantage in terms of screen size as both Redmi 2 and Moto E features a screen smaller than 5 inch. The HD display is decent and colors look vibrant and bright enough for making the display useable even in the sunlight.
The thing which should be noted here is that the screen is not protected by any technology or Gorilla glass which makes screen prone to dust and fingerprint. Rest the display is very much apt as per the price is concerned.
Hardware and Software
Coolpad has tried its best to make Dazen 1 a powerful smartphone. The phone is powered by the 1.2GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and is supported by a 2GB of RAM. At under 6000 INR, the specification is definitely better than most of the other smartphones available in the market. Dazen 1 offers 8 GB of internal storage out of which 4.3 GB is available to the user and it can be expanded up to 32GB by using a microSD card.
The phone gets little warm while multitasking and heavy gaming which is normal for any smartphone. We experienced a decent lag free usage and even HD videos played without any lag or issue. There was no distortion in the sound. Although, the sound was low but, it was clear and full. Dazen 1 runs on Android 4.4 out of the box and features Coolpad’s own UI. There is no app drawer and all the apps are listed on the home screen. The UI is average and there is very less bloatware as compared with Redmi 2 and Moto G 2nd Generation. There is nothing special in the UI but, it is enough to provide a good lag-free user experience.
The device is equipped with an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and auto-focus. The phone also has a 5 MP front facing camera and this combination of 8MP and 5MP is rare to see in such price range. The rear camera is not the best camera we have seen in this price segment and if you are expecting a lot from the camera, you might get disappointed.
Although, the camera captures decent images in sunlight but, fails to excel in low light. The camera of the phone could have been better but, you can’t complaint as you can’t get a perfect smartphone at this price point. The front camera is also average and can deliver good quality selfies in good light conditions.
Dazen 1 is fuelled by a 2,500mAh battery which can easily last for an entire day with moderate usage. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Dazen 1 has got the best battery in its price segment. The phone doesn’t offer any smart or quick power saving mode but, you will not need it if you are an average user.
Coolpad Dazen 1 is one of those phones which looks strong on paper and actually delivers in real life. It is one of the best affordable smartphones available in the market. If we leave the camera part, the phone has got everything which a typical user looks for in a smartphone. Although, the camera is not that bad but other devices like Redmi 2 offers a better camera. So, if you are looking for a powerful phone with excellent battery, go for Dazen 1 and you won’t be disappointed. It is priced at INR 5,999 and is available on Snapdeal through flash sale model.
