Canon EOS 5D Mark IV – Hands on & Features

Canon today launched the Canon 5D Mark IV in India. The EOS 5D series of DSLRs from Canon brings many new things to the table. The Mark IV brings a plethora of new features to the consumer. When the Mark III was launched back in the day, it didn’t really bring any major changes with itself but one great thing about the Mark III is the Auto Focus system which was one of the best in the DSLRs that released recently.

5D has always been a go-to choice for the professional and even hobby photographers and videographers at large and now that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has launched in India, you can buy this new powerhouse for roughly 2.5 lacs (Body only).

Build Quality & Design

As soon as your look at the Canon 5D Mark IV, you will notice the resemblance that it carries from its older sibling i.e. Canon 5D Mark III. This is a very positive thing to do on Canon’s part since they didn’t really want to add a new learning curve to the existing users of the 5D Mark III series.

The body of the camera itself has many improvements and tweaks. The grip where you hold the camera with your hand is now bigger which makes it more secure to handle the camera. I mean, you wouldn’t really want to drop such a costly piece of tech, would you?

There is also a new GPS unit that will let you Geotag your photos. The camera body is also weatherproof and with new additions like the GPS unit and more, it is surprising that Canon was able to reduce the weight of the camera by 50g.

The camera itself is well built and feels solid even though the weight of the camera is reduced. The body is built out of magnesium alloy and polycarbonate which adds to the built of the body. There is also a cover for the prism which is made out of glass fibre.

Buttons & Other Body Features

Canon 5D Mark IV now adds a new customizable button which can found just under the joypad. You can choose to assign the button to do a function out of multiple choices. You will also not be able to miss the viewfinder and the touch screen display which is not only bright, but it comes with Canon’s Intelligent Viewfinder II technology which will help you in clicking a perfect shot.

The display has 1.62 million dots which makes it very sharp and you can use it to browse through your images or more importantly to change settings on the go.

The power switch is now moved to the top left side of the camera. There are now different switches for the power switch as well as for the controller lock. You will find the mode switcher dial on top left on the body of the camera.

There’s an LCD display on the top right of the body that will show information related to the current settings of the camera. Other control buttons for Auto Focus, Exposure, and even ISO are located on the top side of the body.

Image quality

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV comes with 30.4MP sensors which is an improvement if you compare it with the Mark III as it came with a 22.3MP sensor. The ISO on Mark IV ranges from 100-32,000 and it is expandable up to 50-102,400. This will allow you to take shots in the perfect way. The ISO, Autofocus settings, the exposure settings altogether provide you a great way to take some shots that you can flaunt.

There is an additional Dual Pixel Raw technology which will allow photographers to get the most out of their RAW shots. Each of the pixels responsible to take the photo is created of two photodiodes which will allow the camera to take pictures in two different viewpoints. The Digital Photo Professional software from Canon will allow you to make the adjustments to get the perfect picture you desire.

Yes, the file size of each of these photos is expected to get doubled and hence a RAW image can range from 37MB to 70MB depending on the data it captures. But this means you will get much more details and higher quality in the images.

Price in India

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is available at the price of Rs. 2,54,995 for the body itself. It will be made available starting September 8 2016 and you will get an updated kit lens of EF24-105mm f/4L IS which is a great option to have. The combo of kit lens and body comes at a price of Rs. 3,24,955 and if you choose to go with the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS lens then the combo will be priced at Rs 3,06,995.
