Asus ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL) Review

Asus is surely turning out to be a key player in the smartphone market. Asus ZenFone series is already a hit and the latest Asus ZenFone 2 series is selling like hot cakes. Asus has tried a lot with coming up with a device in each field. The FonePad and MemoPad series was decent but failed to impress the users. However, that has not stopped Asus to try its luck in the tablet segment.

This time, Asus has decided to use their lucky charm name “Zen” and this is the result that we have ZenPad 8.0 in the market. Will ZenPad be able to cash in the success of ZenFone series or not, let’s see in our review of Asus ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL).

Looks and Design
Asus is known for including the concentric circles pattern in all of their devices but, surprisingly the trademark pattern is missing in Asus ZenPad 8.0. On-Screen buttons are also missing and the screen itself has occupied close to 75% of the front side. The speaker and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera are placed above the display.

Asus has worked very clearly on the design aspect as the device, it features a thin chrome plastic strip all around the display which gives this tablet a metallic look. In reality, both the actual frame and rear are made up of plastic.

Both the power button and volume rocker are on the right side of the device, with the USB and audio jack on the top. Another good thing about the looks of the tablet is the removable back cover. It is a plastic panel but, features a textured finish that looks like leather from a far distance.

The one basic reason behind buying a tablet is that people love to watch movies and play games on a big screen. The ZenPad 8.0 features an 8” display with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The display has good viewing angles and it is a vibrant display.

Even at the maximum brightness it is not a very bright display and it is hard to read under sunlight. Overall, the display is good for multimedia consumption. Users will have a good viewing experience while playing games or while watching movies and videos.

Audio Cover

To give users a better audio experience, Asus has come up with one of its own unique kind of accessory. You can buy the audio cover accessory which is sold separately for Rs. 3000. It works both as a protective cover and additional speaker. You just need to attach the cover to the device and you can enjoy 5.1 surround sound system on your tablet.

The audio cover has got an excellent finish and texture and thanks to the magnetic sensor it can unlock the device when you flip open the tablet. A must have accessory for all those who are planning to buy Asus ZenPad 8.0.

Hardware & Performance
Asus ZenPad 8.0 houses a 1.4GHz Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC and is supported by a 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB. It supports 4G and other features include Bluetooth, WI-Fi and long lasting 4000mAh battery. The device delivers a good performance and is capable of handling moderate multitasking with ease.

A bit of heating is expected in all the devices nowadays and Asus ZenPad 8.0 is not an exception here. Users can enjoy low end or mid range games on the device without any issues. For high end games like Asphalt 8, we did face minor issues on high settings but the game was running better on medium settings.

The device comes with Android 5.0 out of the box with ZenUI on the top. ZenUI is one of the most loved UI and it is pretty much popular among users. The software in the tablet is almost identical to the one present in ZenFone. Everything about the UI is perfect with just one exception, ZenUI comes with a large amount of bloatware and lot of it can’t even be uninstalled.

There is only handful of tablets that actually features a good camera that can click some decent photos. Asus ZenPad 8.0 also falls in a category of tablets that features a camera which does not capture photos as good as a smartphone. The device features an 8 MP of rear camera and a 2 MP of front camera. The back camera can be used for occasional photography but don’t expect it to capture high-quality images.

The tablet features a 4,000 mAh battery which gives this device a battery life of around 1 day with high usage. You can easily watch more than 8 hours of videos or movies on the tablet without worrying about the charge left in the battery.

Final Verdict
At 14,999, Asus ZenPad 8.0 is a good choice. It has got the looks of a premium device and with Audio over at its side, it can be the perfect multimedia device. If you are not a fan of full HD display and are looking for a tablet for general use like watching movies, videos, playing casual games and reading e-books then, we would suggest you to keep Asus ZenPad 8.0 at the top of your list.

  1. The audio cover is nowhere to be found online? Is it even available in India?
