Asus ZenFone was among one of the best sellers in the year 2014 and is still selling like hot cakes. It was ZenFone 5 which created a lot of buzz in the town. Cutthroat pricing and amazing specs was the main reason behind the success of ZenFone series.
Users were eagerly waiting for the next version of ZenFone series and the excitement crossed all the barriers when Asus announced that ZenFone 2 will feature a 4GB of RAM, making it the first phone in the world with such a huge RAM. Is ZenFone 2 as good as other devices available in the market or is it even better, read the complete review to decide.
Design and Display
Asus has done massive changes in terms of design. It is a mid-range smartphone but, looks like a high-end flagship device. Although, it is made up of a plastic but, still it feels like a premium device.
The back side of the phone has got brushed metal finish and the rounded curves on the four sides tapers down towards the edges so, making the grip of the phone, strong and firm. The back is fingerprint proof and houses the volume rocker.
There are no buttons on the right and left side of the phone. The volume rocker is on the back side just below the camera, a design concept which was first used in LG G2. The power button is on the top of the phone and all the buttons have got ribbed texture.
It does feel new and fresh, but it also creates a small problem. The phone has got a 5.5” display which makes it harder to use the power button with just one hand. Although, the phone features double tap to wake and sleep which can eliminate this problem.
There is Asus branding on the top front side of the phone and the three capacitive buttons are visible and are not backlit. There is a metal chin of concentric circle on the bottom of the display, a trademark which Asus uses in all of its devices.
There are four variants of the device and all four features 5.5-inch display. All four also features full HD display expect the one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM.
The phone delivers stunning sharp and vivid images with excellent viewing angles. The phone offers different display mode like vivid mode, reading mode and manual mode so that you can set the color saturation and ratio as per your needs.
The 4GB RAM models are powered by a 64-bit 2.3 GHz Quad Core Intel Atom Z3580 and the 2GB RAM models feature a 64-bit 1.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Atom Z3560 processor. We got the 4GB model and is would not be an exaggeration to say that the phone is a pure powerhouse.
It also features a PowerVRG6430 GPU which was first used in iPhone 5s. We tried to open 20 apps at a time and still there was no lag which means multitasking is a breeze. We also tried to play Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2 alternatively and still there was not even a minute lag or problem with the phone. The phone come in three storage variants and each variant offers expandable storage up to 64GB.
Everything is perfectly fine with the phone expect the sound quality. The speaker grill of the phone is on the back side and it gets disturbed when you place it down. Although the phone has a slightly curved back but still the sound output is not very loud. Overall, Asus Zenfone 2 is a powerful phone which can handle all your apps, games and multitasking with ease.
Asus ZenFone 2 features a 13 MP rear camera with dual LED flash. Just like previous ZenFone series, it also uses Pixel Master Technology for delivering good quality images. The camera offers lot of modes like Super Resolution, HDR, Beautification, Low Light, Smart Remove etc. The camera captures decent quality images but we have seen other devices in the same price segment perform better in terms of camera quality.
The front camera is of 5MP and delivers decent selfies. The best part of the front camera is that it offers real-time beautification and selfie panorama, features which are not seen in most of the phones. However, the camera app is a feature rich app and offers many modes for clicking images.
Asus ZenFone 2 runs on Android 5.0 out of the box with Zen UI on the top. The UI feels fresh and new. It offers in built feature for locking apps and hiding them which means you don’t have to download third party apps for securing your apps.
Zen UI offers a lot of unwanted apps, but few of them are really useful. There is a one handed mode which allows for simple and comfortable one-handed use, and can easily be started by a double-tap of the home button. It also offers gesture control like a double tap to wake up and sleep. Zen UI allows you to customize the interface with the built-in theme engine which can be used to change the look and feel of the entire phone with different fonts and icons, lock screen, and even notification shade.
Battery and connectivity
The phone is backed up by a 3000 mAh battery with fast charging technology. It delivers decent performance which could have been better. It is a dual SIM phone and connectivity features include 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, OTG, NFC and GPS.
The 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM variant is priced at INR 22,999 and the 4GB/32GB ROM variant is priced at INR 19,999. The 2GB/16GB variant with full HD display is priced at 14,999 and the 2GB/16GB model with quad HD display is priced at INR 12,999.
