Design & Build
The Asus GL552VW ROG gaming laptop is technically a laptop but with such features, it is expected to come with some bulk. The design of the laptop is good and sturdy but that does not mean you should try and drop it or throw it around. The laptop has a metal chassis so expect it to be heavy. The laptop weighs roughly around 2.6 KG which means it is heavier than the most day to day laptops out there.
The exterior of the laptop is made up of plastic and the lid itself has a textured plastic which gives it a “gamey” feel and look. The ROG logo on the hood is backlit which makes it look really cool.
If you choose to go for a more expensive version of the laptop, then you will get brushed aluminum on the hood which gives it an amazing look. All in all, the build of the design is really good, and you can feel the sturdiness while carrying the laptop due to the weight.
The laptop actually features a Full HD IPS display manufactured by LG Philips. The resolution of the display is 1920×1080 pixels. The size of the display is 15.6 inches, and it is a non-touch display. The games look good on it but since it is an IPS display, the response time is a bit more than a normal TN Panel display. But the display itself looks gorgeous.
Keyboard & Trackpad
The keyboard has nothing special to offer, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The keyboard works fine, and you won’t need much time to get used to it. They are also backlit which means typing or gaming in the dark is going to be easier. Coming to the trackpad, it is a decent trackpad but who games using a trackpad? It is accurate and smooth, but I think Asus could have used a better sensor to make it more responsive.
Hardware, Performance & Upgradability
This is one of the many top end laptops that comes with the latest generation of Intel processors. But when we take games into consideration, they are not really CPU centric. They do require a good CPU but in reality, you need a good GPU in order to game properly with good FPS.
The laptop provides you an option to choose between Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ or Intel Core i5-6300HQ. If you want to perform more CPU intensive stuff like working on documents like Excel sheets, programming, etc. then it is a better choice to go with the Intel Core i7 version else if you just want to game, go with i5, and you will be fine.
Coming to the GPU part, you get dual GPUs on the laptop. You get Integrated Intel HD 530 onboard GPU along with a more powerful Nvidia GTX 960M 2GB Graphics Processor. You can expect decent FPS when you game with this GPU but don’t expect full HD high FPS gaming. You will be able to game but expecting a PC level performance from a mobile GPU is not fair.
When it comes to upgradability, you will be able to upgrade the RAM up to 32GB, and that’s about it.
Heating, Battery Life & Verdict
With such features, it is surprising that the laptop doesn’t really heat much under load. The top middle part of the keyboard gets warm up to 45 degrees Celcius, and that is all. The battery life is decent but if you want to game, make sure you have a wall socket nearby.
All in all, this is a great gaming laptop from Asus, but there are a few things that Asus could have worked better on. Factors like a better GPU would have been better, but that would have increased the price.
